Hi All
I have a Christies charger which has now done over the 200 hour mark and needs the valves adjusted.
Intake .15 mm
Exhaust .20 mm
Both cold.
I have not adjusted valves for AGES, and need my memory jogged.
How do I know the motor is in the right cycle to check the gap?
Will it be obvious which is intake/exhaust?
It is an OH valve, do I need a new rocker cover gasket before I start.
Do I need the drain the oil before pulling the rocker cover off?
Manual also states Combustion chamber cleanout at 300 hours. Does anyone actually believe this will need doing and if so are they just talking about the exhaust port?
I have Site Linkcome across two different manuals but for what I'm looking at the settings are the same.

Thanks for your help.

Lyndon

Lyndon,
The piston must be at top dead centre to adjust the valves, remove the spark plug, turn the motor over slowly, and feel for compression with your finger/thumb over the spark plug hole. When it stops blowing and starts sucking you are at top dead centre (tdc). With the rocker cover off, there should be a little bit of play in the rocker arms. Using your feeler guages, slide the required thickness between the rocker and valve stem and adjust the tappet until slight resistance is felt on the guage when you try to remove it. Repeat this for the other valve.

Hey Lyndon,

I havent adjusted the valves yet on my GX100 Christies charger, havent done as many hours as you have.

I was just wondering what you think of your Christies charger so far?
What size batteries do you charge with it?
I charge normally the 100 A/H in the car with 70 A/H in the trailer paralleled up. When both batteries are discharged it really makes the engine work!!

Also how do you store yours while travelling? I made a box up for mine but it's rather bulky to fit in.

I was actually considering selling mine and buying an EU10 or Eu20 with a Ctek for versatillity. what are your thoughts?

Cheers
Chris.

Hi Chris
I'm assuming you have the 80 amp Charger not the 55 ?
I use mine to either charge the Tvan batteries 2x100amp or the cars 3x 50amp AGM's. Yes, when flat it works hard, just use low setting to start with.
I bought ours sometime ago and would probably do things as you are suggesting. I don't think high Amp chargers like Ctek we so common 5 years ago? As we use lots of power I didn't want a 5 or 10 Amp charger and have to run it all day. I have had one person complain, my answer, “we I might give you the s--ts for 2 hours a day but you give it to me ALL day with your Generator!” I can't fault the machine, very easy to start and never had a fault with it. As you know it is quite a bit noisier than the Honda's.
There are higher Amp chargers (40 amp) available of EBay. I saw a new 25 amp Ctek for sale on EBay the other day for about $350.
If I was to change over now I would go a EU10, or a larger Yamaha for when I get old and soft and buy a van with an aircon :-). The Eu20 screams it's t-ts of trying to run a aircon so most people don't use it for this.
I store my Christies at the end of the bed in the Tvan. make sure you always run it on your car mat or similar and the filter will stay spotless, mine looks like new. Worked the valve thing out myself in the end. The exhaust valve was a tiny bit out of spec but apart from that all good. Will take me sometime to run up another 200 hours.
Cheers Lyndon

Hi Lyndon,

Yeah I too have the 80 amp model and has been good to me so far. The box i made for mine I have set up so the unit when running sits up on top of the box to stop it being in the dirt/sand.

Ours typically gets used on the beach at Fraser Is and I find it needs to fully wiped down and sprayed with something like lanotec because it doest seem long for certain components to start corroding. (Salty Air I guess) I took the fly wheel cover off and the fly wheel had corrosion on it.

I don't know what I will do with mine yet I really don't want to sell it but at the moment its only getting used a couple of times a year......decisions decisions!!!!

Cheers
