whatever the handbook says is a good guide. It will prob say 10k or six months, whichever comes sooner, which is fine for a petrol engine (in most cases, 5k intervals for a petrol eng is not necessary)
If you are towing or in dusty conditions a lot (i.e "severe operatiing conditions" according to most handbooks) then 5k may be required.

Hi Zacc
In most modern vehicles these days, they have all extended the services times. I always change my oil and filter every 5000 kilometres as it is cheap insurance for the motor.

Cheers

Stephen

The handbook for my 1HZ Toyota says change the oil at 5000ks and the filter at 10000ks but why would you put 10 litres of expensive oil in an engine and not change the filter ? I always change both.

Rob.

A used filter will have better filtering then a new filter as long as it is not restrictive or has an internal fault

Please tell me different...think about it.

A used filter will always have better filtering properties then a new one as long as it not restrictive.

If a new filter is rated at 35 microns, it will stop anything bigger the 35 microns getting through so every thing below 35 microns will go through.

If the filter catches 35 micron bits, over time it will start catching 34 micron bits and so on to a point of the filter becoming restrictive.

Withs filters there is a big gap between letting enough air through and restriction.

Why do you think they have such large surface areas.

Look at big earth moving gear (80plus liters of engine oil) with restriction gauges on air filters and regularly oil testing.....they change filters(excluding fuel filters) and oil when needed.

Same as people think they have to change engine oil every 5000k...why?

The only thing you are helping is the pockets of the oil company's.

This came about when engine oils were very basic and had no stabilisers, friction modifiers, detergents or partial suspending additives in them.

This is more a gimmick that had been drummed into peoples heads buy oil company's, and service people.

Sure some vehicles need clean oil for injectors and timing chain tensioner but few and far between.

Look at the Euro vehicles with 30 to 60000K plus service and filter intervals....why...better oils.

Just because the oil goes black doesn't mean it needs changing.

The best thing to do is get the oil tested at 2500k intervals and see whats happening...you might be surprised.

So then, what do you do about the reduced oil flow? There's a reason why an oil filter is changed at regular intervals and that's not only because it's filthy, it's because of the increased pressure that the blocked filter starts to develope. It starts to reduce flow as soon as it starts to gather particles. The worst case scenario is that the Bypass Valve opens allowing unfiltered oil through to the engine. The Filter Paper that's used in the Filter also starts to deterioate as soon as it get's soaked so even if you don't do the required amount of Kilometers, Time may also warrant an oil filter change.
Are you reallygonna worry about a measly 20-50 bucks every time you do an oil change? I'm not. It's good insurance and I believe good maintenance.

Look, at the end of the day, if you want to go ahead and risk your engine by Keeping/using a dirty oil filter then go ahead. It doesn't make any difference to me whatsoever. But don't go around telling other people it's a good idea. Please.

You talk about Euro Vehicles having longer service intervals? Well, that's ok. They have Better Diesel to start with and colder weather. Comparing Euro Vehicles operating in Europe with Euro Vehicles operating in Australia is like comparing Apples with Grapes.

You talk about heavy earth moving trucks and having 80 odd litres of oil in them... Were not. We're talking about Everyday, 4wd vehicles that go down to the shops, tow a trailer or caravan, take the kids to school. They aren't running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Totlly different scenario. But, I know what you're trying to say. However, I'd rather put a few more dollars in the oil company's pocket than put thousands getting my engine rebuilt.

I wholeheartedly agree with people who want to change their oil and filter at 5000kms or 10,000kms. It's good for the Engine, It's good insurance and it's good for Resale.

Oh, and BTW, As soon as the Oil goes black, it means that the oil has contaminants in it.

The manufactures guide is best - but if you do yourself and talking diesel - quality filters and a major oil brand is best.Include BP, Mobil, Shell , Caltex . Penrite - be careful of no name brands -I am talking 10 years experience at senior management level major brands level , 5000 - 10000km best
