Navigation... what next?

Hi all,

I am just starting to get into off road navigation, and am awaiting delivery of my Garmin 60CSx.

Had a look on Treks here, chose a familiar place (Watagan Mountains), then downloaded the trek file in .GPX format.

The way I understand things, .GPX files are only used for data transfer, so the big question.... what do I do with that file now, to make it useful to me?

I opened the file with notepad to have a look see... it sure has a lot of track point data, but obviously it doesn't 'do' anything.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Dave

You need a mapping program such as Garmins trip & waypoint manager (which should come with your Garmin). This allows you transfer files to and from your GPS, as well as edit those files on your PC.

Thanks Fred,
Had a feeling something like that would be necessary. I have the trial version of Ozi on my PC, but as a trial, it will only accept BMP files. The Garmin seems to be in short supply, the shop here no longer has them, so I am purchasing from GPSOZ, who are out of stock.

I guess I will just have to be patient, and fill in my spare time reading GPS Navigation in Australia...lol. Good book, but need that GPS to arrive so I can get the hang of it. Thanks again,
Dave

Dave,

The Oziexplorer download should have contained two versions = the Shareware/Demo version and the Trial version. The Shareware /Demo version is restricted to .BMP files but the Trial version will accept all supported image formats.

The .GPX file ( a data format for the interchange of GPS data (waypoints, routes, and tracks) between applications ) needs to be imported into Ozi once you have loaded the relevant image file.

Hi Gramps,

SUCCESS!!! Created and calibrated a 'blank map' covering the co-ordinates in the Watagan file
Imported the GPX file, and bingo!, a route that could be loaded on my gps (if it ever comes!).

Actually, not sure if I can download from the trial version, don't really care, just trying to nut things out at the moment.

Thanks very much for your help, made my day!

Thanks,
Dave
