Patrol Rear Suspension

We have a 3.0L GU Patrol & will be towing a 24ft Jayco bunk van during the 2nd leg of our "around Oz" trip. We previously had an 18ft Jayco Expanda & travelled for 13 months during which time the back end of the Patrol has sagged quite a bit.

I want to get things right before we head off again but am undecided whether I should install new rear springs or air bags - one or the other or both - I'm not sure.

I'm interested to hear other people's opinions.

You should fit new or reset springs anyway Ronnie , then consider helper air bags , not full air bags.
Check all the weights / downforce first though to ensure you get right springs.

Check your rear spring tower supports as well. I don't imagine your vehicle has taken a pounding over corrugations towing a van but the weights can affect them adversly leading to cracking. There are a few companies/mechanics who strengthen them. I've had mine done through ATOC Autos in Melbourne's outer east.

Cheers Mick

Is your Patrol an Auto or manual and what is the vans ATM as a 24ft would be

pretty heavy for an auto..

Might be part of the trouble.

A set of Progressive springs may be the answer.

I put them in my Cruiser and am really happy with the ride both full and empty.

We towed our heavy Bushtracker with our 3 litre Patrol and it rode well. The Patrol did have a heavy duty suspension when we bought it ex government.

With the F250 we made the decision to add airbags rather than an extra leaf to the springs, as the latter would be a hard ride when not under load. We can adjust the airbags to suit the circumstance.

It sounds like you will be towing most of the time, so this may be the answer, but if it is already sagging, the springs and/or shockies may need replacing first anyway. If in good condition, springs can be re-tempered.

I had a GU for 5 years and travelled around the paddock for 3 months towing a pop up van (about 1500kg's)

I had poly airbags in the rear and highly recommend them. Never an issue, kept the rear end level and no more 'bottoming out' over grids etc.

You can always put in the air bags and see how you go. If you need more support, upgrade the springs if necessary, the bags just go back in anyway.

Good luck.
