I am traveling the Nullarbor in January and would like to camp overnight about 1hr west of Port Augusta.

I would prefer not to stay in a roadside rest area. If it was away from the road that would be OK. My Camps 5 book only shows rest areas on the A1.

I will be arriving at about 6-7pm and only need to stay one night in my camper trailer.

Has anyone stayed in Lake Gilles Conservation Park or somewhere in that area?

Any tips would be great.

Cheers
Nick

wouldnt surprise me if camping technically isnt permitted but shouldnt be anything stopping you from an overnighter away the trucks

We went that way in October and Stayed at Nuttbush Retreat. Reasonable amenities but close to the highway. See also thread 72423.

Lake Gilles is about 12 or so km from the highway as I recall. There is a camp spot there. I was there last in 2004 and at that stage there were no facilities. Take your own firewood with you if you intend to cook on an open fire.

As for fires in the open, be mindful that there will be restrictions on fires in that erae for that time of the year. Severe penalties apply for non-compliance. There may even be total fire bans (depending on weather etc). Best to stick with a gas fueled cooker. Good luck with your trip.

Been there a few times in recent years when crossing that region - the gravel road in from the highway is very good - it's only a short, quick trip - heaps of spots to camp - as others have said, no facilities and bring your firewood in.

Cheers for the quick replies. Sounds like Lake Gilles could be exactly what I am looking for.

I rang the info line for the Gawler Ranges area and he wasn't very helpful and basically said that they mainly cater for wildlife conservation areas, not campers or caravanners. Not sure what he was talking about...

At least the Exploroz gang has pulled through with the goods!

Graham, cheers for the thread and link.
