Hi Sean
It is a great road to drive and questions are asked regularly. Tjukayirla is a top spot to stay and make sure that you see the caves that Andrew has found (Check out my short Trek on these, here on OE). Make sure that you keep a very good eye out for camels. Just last week on the news, they had a story on just how bad they are around Docker River. Also if you have not travelled this road before, the Giles Weather Station is also a must visit site as well.

Have a great Trip and enjoy the Great Central.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Sean, we did the trip in July this year with the 100 series LC and pulling an off road Van, no problems, the WA road was good but the NT section was a bit rough..................we counted over 300 abandoned vehicles along the road and gave up counting after that..............Call into Giles Weather Station it is worth a look and the Guys there are very friendly.............Leaving December, take plenty of Sun Screen and Water......Have a great trip!!

It's gonna be warm and more than likely get a few thunderstorms with heavy patchy rain.

G'day Sean,

Just finished coming over the GCR last Sunday. Drove from Alice to Karratha. The road is good from Laverton to within about 100Kms of Warburton. It is poor for 100Km either side of Warburton and good from there through to the border.

From the border to the Olgas is very ordinary in places and you'll find yourself driving up on the shoulders a lot, trying to get away from the corrugations.

It was VERY hot, with temps over 38 degrees before 9:30 AM each day and not dropping below 40 - 42 degrees until the Sun was setting in the evening. Kind of makes you want to stay in the car in the air conditioning, rather than getting out and looking at the sights.

We stayed overnight at a free camp between Warburton and Warkurna and had the whole place place to ourselves. There is a water tank there, but it's empty.

Came across two separate lots of travellers with broken-down vehicles. Both situations were in-hand by the time we got there but in both cases the travellers were decidely underprepared and in vehicles that were definitely not roadworthy. A word of caution here....do not offer water, oil, food or tools if you will leave yourself short of these things for yourself. No point in adding another stranded group to the list. You can still assist by getting word to the next Community or roadhouse, or using your comms to contact help.

Only saw one camel and that was right at the Warburton townsite. Plenty of evidence of them being around, though.

Cheers

Russ.

G'day Sean & Maureen,

I would give you a call but have lost your number. Missed you on the Safari this year but looks like we might bump into you on the GCR. We are departing on the 15th with the first stop at Laverton. We are travelling the complete Outback Way and spending Christmas in Brisbane. Please make contact if you don't have my number give Ron & Wendy a call.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers
Geoff & Chris

Thanks Russ, Perth to Alice is our first leg, then over to Rockhampton, down the east coast & back through Vic & SA. Planning to be back in WA around the end of February. We are towing an off road Pod trailer and have tried to do plenty of planning before we head off. Extra fuel, water, tools comms, etc. Hopefully we are well prepared.
Good advice about Warburton, I have had many people now tell me that same thing.
Getting close now, the family are all keen to hit the road.
Thanks to all for the feedback to my post.
