I have decided to fit a kaymar rear wheel carrier to my 100 series Landcruiser. I am wondering what people are using and are they happy.
I am looking at fitting it on the drivers side as the fridge slide is on that side and it would swing out of the way to slide out the fridge?
Any feedback?
thanks

I prefer to have them on the left hand side incase you need to swing them out when parked on the road side, hate to see it taken out by a passing vehicle.

Waeco owners like them on the left, Engle to the right, Bfg's in the Middle and Coppers don't like them at all........... LOL
I think I like them on the right as it is easier to see over the left shoulder and have an unobstructed view of the L/h corner. Having said that I am making one at the moment that will go on the left mainly because that is where all the wiring for the HF set is and I couldn't be buggered re-routing the wiring.

Stick it on the RIGHT HAND SIDE.
That allows you to access the rear area via the narrower left rear door without having to swing a spare wheel every time....IF you have a 105 series
barn door.
The swing of the spare wheel DOES NOT cause the wheel to be particularly wide of the vehicle and catch a passing road train or eagle.
If you have a 100 series, then I guess it's not important which side it is on, as you will have to swing the spare wheel every time to access the rear.
Barn dooors rule...I carry a beaut portable table anyway.

My single is mounted on the passenger's side - they do swing out a fair way when open - best not to be on the passing traffic side it would seem.

A lady who shall remain nameless had a wheel on the right of an earlier vehicle and had it come unlocked and had it swipe a car heading the opposite way. Next one they bought was the opposite side. Ouch :-O

Left hand side. It not only swings out of the way of passing traffic, but the lean of the road is usually to the left, therefore it tends to swing open. If on the right, then you need to lock it open all the time to stop it swinging closed on you.
Cheers

I have
mine on the RH side as we have a awning on the left. It lakes it easier to get around back to side and back again for cooking etc. I also have a roof top camper and their doors are on the LH side.
Very happy with it as
well. You can lock the tyre on with a padlock and I tape up the wiring for the tail light where it joins. ARB fitted
mine and did a great job.

Ours is on the left. Series 100 cruiser. Only because of passing traffic safety and thats a "natural" swing when parked on the side of roads. We also started with an empty car.
Apart from that I gather it would come down to things like
Being left or right handed.
Do you use the lower tail
gate for anything like food prep etc.
Balance to even out something extra heavy on one side of the car - maybe inside.
Just like it that way. and
Already have a jerry can holder or something on the other side.

If you tow an van trailer or boat, make sure the swing arm does not hit the pull up handle of the towed van/trailer. I had to re position the swing arm locking device and shorten the swing arm so that I could pull out the swing arm and open the rear doors with the vehicle in the straight ahead position.
Prior to the shortening the swing armetc, the only way I could get into the back of the Cruiser was to have the vehicle at 45 deg to the van allowing me to unlock the swing arm then get at the rear doors.

Had the same issue with a camper trailer we hired. Had to
park skew width to allow the swing arm to fully open.

Mine is on the right hand side- easy access to the left hand
barn door. If you don't have
barn doors, I'd probably go with the left-hand mounted carrier.

I've had them on either side and dual, doesn't really matter. If you have it on the right and if you are parked that close to the side of the road that it will get hit your'e an idiot anyway and also the tyre on the LHS blocks your potential escape route to run if a vehicle came hurtling towards you. You would have to run around the tyre first before getting run over.
Just a thought.
Cheers

Mine is on he left side and I think its the most sensible side as I forget to lock it and at least on that side it usually
swings open.
On a Kaymar the little pin that holds it open is able to be bent by a heavy wheel swinging back on it.
Locking a wheel on wont stop them as you can ping the bearing cover off and remove the whole arm in about 2 minutes max.
I have drilled a hole thru the clips and arm that fits into it so it is impossible to remove the arm once I have stuck a quality padlock thru it.
The other reason its on that side is I got it almost new and a bumper already drilled for $500 including $100 worth of LED tail lights thrown in.
LOL

I'm for the left.
Got an ARB rear bar (not that it matters) but thought of the potential for a stray motorist to clean me up when I'm removing it. Took the risk out of the equation.
Although some purist don't like this as you lose sight of the badging (4.2TD) on that side.
Poor souls.......
Good luck

I have both. But my point is I lock one shut and use it for a ladder to the roof rack. In my case I use the right one as that's my stronger stepping leg.

Put one on both sides then you will find it doesn't make much difference from L. 2. R .
I have only had to take a spare off twice, and when I think about it I have only used the R hand spare.
Now is that because I was born left handed, or perhaps the one on the left still looks brand new, perhaps it might be they are LT tyres on split rims?.
Or am I just naturally biased, a bit of a lean too the left perhaps.?
