Well.... got the truck. The heavy rigid licence comes in a couple of weeks assuming that I pass the course/tests.

1988 Scania tray. Should explore a bit of oz in that! [as long as someone pays me].

Meanwhile the son gets to move his excavator at mates rates.

I must take a pic of the effie and the gooseneck horsefloat hitched up. It enormous.

What amazes me is that you don't need an endorsed licence to drive it. A rigid truck has to easier.

She was abuz to drive. Just imagine running across a paddock with the big trailor hooked with and a centurion on it. Got the picture!

1. Now put a tree in front. What was that? Just a tree - keep going.
2. What about a creek. Darn it I thought you said it would be dry.Well it is now hey!
3. No track - Now there is.

We had so much fun out on exercise with the tanks. Once you got some speed up nothing would stop or hurt you. Luckily we didn't have to fix them. Funny how the mechanics gave us horrible looks. Yeah the brakes worked but that wasn't fun.

They were a real buz. Always got police escorts on the road and when loaded. All up over 100 tons and quite capable of 80MPH. Not supposed to go there but . . . Shucks.

So, is your sons mate a collector? If so he will also know the old mack, Diamond T and the Studie bakers wreckers as well. My old ones are at Moorebank and still running. They only recently retired the studibaker when they broke the front winch on a 4WD recovery up near Oberon. Yeah My son got stuck and the Army got him out using the Mack and the Studie. I last drove them in 1966. I wasn't the recce mech though. Just his driver.

Cheers

Your post brought back a few memories, I was at SME Casula in the 60's. We had a couple of Federal prime movers, Diamond T wreckers, (ex WW2) and also quite a few Studebaker 6x6s which were fresh out of storage, the build date on the dashboard was 1942 and in 1964 the speedo reading less than 200 miles when they were issued to our unit. We also had a tank transporter on trial from the US Army, I think it was a Hercules with a petrol engine V10 or V12, a massive thing, it could carry a Centurion tank no trouble.
You can't accuse the army of being wasteful, I regularly see the International "S Series" they bought in the early 60's on the highway, they must have millions of miles behind them or maybe they're just out of storage !

Your kidding it can't be. I was at 2 Base WKSP just down the road. Our unit, as well as all the "heavy" repairs and maintenance, used to do the outwards inspections, cleanup and services for any vehicle being issued out of the stores. Forgot the name of the store mob. A real big deal and both 2 base wksp and the stores are still there. That were my trucks still are. I was there mid 60's also. 1966 to be precise.

I will never forget one week we had to rotate through the mechanics awhole big shed of unused (yep unused) EH holdens. Did you ever see all the vehicles and plant they had. I got all my plant endorsements from SME. Was at 7 Fd Sqn up with 24 Const at Enoggera for 18 months as well.

This is getting off the mark for the thread topic. We will get shot so I will leave it at that. Watch out for a silver 100 series LC with a home made stone guard on the front and a ST4WDC sticker with Vietnam colours on the back window. What a coincidence hey!!!

Good on you Roycee

I have liked the Scania's since the Super 80 and 110 series. Great vehicle, don't over rev them, drive them on their torque and if you make the mistake of double clutching, your clutch pedal will pump up . . solution, drain the air tanks . . fixed . . . . learnt from experience . . . lol

Cheers

Royce,
you should get your HR licence at a certain training facility in SE Qld.

Work with 2 blokes that went from having HR licences to MC licences in 6 hours and $750 . Both had never driven anything with a trailer on it before.
