Hello all,
We are heading to the high country in January 2-9th and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how busy does it get at this time of the year. We are hoping to
camp at
Talbotville. Last time we went we virtually had the
camp at
Talbotville to ourselves but that was around the 13th-20th January. I imagine it will be busier earlier in the year. We will have 7 vehicles travelling together. If
Talbotville is too busy can anyone recommend any
camp sites nearby with
toilets. We would like to be near
Talbotville as we have many day trips planned for around that area.
What are Italian flat, Jimmy Iversons and Ollies Jumpup
camping areas like. We would prefer to be by a river so we can have a dip if hot.
Thanks
Michelle (boldjacks better half)

Michelle
Talbotville is normally busy post Christmas through to the weekend after new year. Could expect somewhere between 10 & 30 cars there at a guess. Numbers usually drop off after that particually mid week. Any other sites nearby with
toilets are just as likely to be busy as
well particually if people can tow their campers or caravans in. I suppose all you can do is just go & take your chances with evereyone else.
Cheers Craig..............

Michelle,
Talbotville can get busy but it is a big
camp site and you should be able to fit in.
I will also be there around the same time so we should be able to catch up.
When I was down there a few ago there were a few trees across the tracks, the chain saw got a good work out.

It will be great to see you Wayne. This trip we are going to stay at
Talbotville the whole time and do some day trips from there. Lets hope we get enough spots at
Talbotville for all 7 vehicles.

You could
camp just over the river at Howittville. Don't know how many times of seen it empty when there has been 50 vehicles at Talbottville. On NYE last year we drove through
Talbotville and there was more people there than at the
Wonnangatta Caravan Park at Waterford; which is a great place by the river only 10k's from
Dargo. If you are looking to do drives around the area the Wonnangatta CP is pretty good as it is at the start of the Crooked River Road.
As for
toilets, none at Howitville that I am aware of. Personally I'd rather dig a hole than share a long drop with the hoards at
Talbotville. Wouldn't be far if you wanted to drive to
Talbotville for number 2's.
Have a great trip wherever you end up. I might be up that way so I'll keep an eye out for any flying white V6 Jackaroo's. It's a great place. Enjoy.

Michelle, I hope you don't mind if I hijack the answer to this post.
The
Vic High Country tracks pass in and out of the Alpine National
Park.
So even getting to some
camp sites you will have to pass through a Nat
Park and if you want to do the right thing, dogs are not permitted.
Even if you had a base
camp at
Talbotville, where dogs are permitted, and you wanted to do a day trip you would most likely pass through a Nat
Park. You could leave a dog tied up at
camp but you would not want to do that.

Dogs are allowed to "pass through" National Parks.
They are also out of the vehicle for "rest" stops as long as they remain restrained.

Dogs (cats etc) are NOT allowed to enter into National Parks.
LINK
Shaker, you have stated otherwise. You have not stated what your 'source is'. Don't you think it would be fair to have done so in order to prevent anyone heeding 'your advice' getting into trouble with the authorities -
Park Rangers.

So what do you do while travelling & get to a national
park, according to your theory you can either leave it chained to the
Park entrance
sign or shoot it!
I don't feel that I need to supply reference material if I make a staement, it is up to the individual to confirm it.
However if it will make you feel better try this .....
WHERE DOGS CAN GO!
You will also notice that at the bottom of this page is some National Parks where dogs can actually
camp with you .....
CAMPING WITH DOGS
DIO, may be you need to research a little deeper!

From the same website "Dogs are permitted in cars only travelling on bitumen roads which pass through national parks."
