Is anyone using a Asus Eee PC with a next g mobile as their modem?
I am having trouble getting it to connect together, always seem to have problems with this sort of computer stuff, Telstra sales person said just plug it in and away you go, so maybe the Eee won't work in this situation? any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Bruce,
For my Samsung A412, I had to download a program called PC studio. It was on the Samsung site and made connecting to the net simple. I rang the Telstra help desk and they explained it- the sales people had no idea!

Bruce, I have the Acer Netbook and use my Motorola V9 as a modem using a Data Pack from Telstra.
It works perfectly with the included Motorola software.
Just a couple of mouse clicks and I'm on the net.
Don't rely on Telstra sales staff. They have no idea whatsoever about any of their products. As a matter of fact I try to buy my phones from privately owned phone shops. They try harder and know their stuff.
cheers

I bought a new Telstra mobile in
Broome a few months back with the express purpose of using it as a modem for my laptop. Paid for a 1G data package and was full of good hope.
Long story made short is that after I finally got some sense from them, a few weeks later in
Darwin, I was told "Oh that will not work with Vista".
At least they refunded the price of the data package and now I have a mobile I probably didn't need.
By the way there is a hotspot over looking the
Pentecost River just out of
Home Hill Station.

I wonder what the issue was???
I have been using a Vista based laptop through my NextG mobile with data plan for a couple of years no problems.
Just brought a new NextG mobile 2 weeks ago and so far I am having the same problem as the original post with not being able to connect my XP Pro based EeePc through the phone.
The vista based laptop works fine.
I wish they would start making some of this stuff more user friendly.

Me too, i have been using my samsung next G with vista home premium for 6 months , all ok, will agree that it is a bit tricky to connect with ph a couple of times, but mostly good.
Have now bought next g modem package, works a treat.

The problem was probably the purchase was made before they had the software to connect to Vi$ta. Similar things were reported on Caravaners
Forum, with a little wait they were able to connect OK.

Hi Isuzumu,
I have the same problem withmy EeePc and yet have been successfully using my NextG phone as a modem with my other laptops for years.
Is your phone a SmartPhone with Windows Mobile operating system or a standard NextG phone?
If you have Windows Mobile then clicking on the Internet Sharing icon is what I have used in the past to connect through the phone. As mentioned in other replies this was a 2 click process. So far I have also been unable to connect the EeePc for some reason.
Will watch this thread with interest but I expect that a post on a
forum like Whirlpool might receive better results from the geek community. Ha!

I've been using my NextG Nokia 6120 as a modem for a couple of years now on three different laptops from win98, XP, Vista and now Win7 with no problems once I sorted out that you must have the Nokia PC Suite installed on the lappy and use the same USB port each time or it "sees" a different modem and you have to adjust the settings to Telstra (or whatever you ISP is) each time you connect.
Tried using Bluetooth for the connection and always had grief so stuck to the USB cable.

Thanks for all your replies everyone, I am using a Telstra ZTE Next G. what I have found when I tried to set it up was....I went to Control Panel..Phone and Modem Options and there it was, but I can not get it to work. So I will tell them it does not and go back to using my Prepaid wireless modem, what a shame as I would think the phone would have got better reception especially as I was going to buy an aerial for it to.

I beeliev that you are better off using your prepaid wireless modem rather than your mobile. Ifound that it was a lot cheeper and more reliable

Hi Bruce
I have an EeePC 900 with a ZTE T7 phone and 3G data. I had to download and install the program "Join ME". Once that is installed it will put a shortcut icon on the desktop. Click that and it will ask for your type of phone (T7 for me), make sure your phone is connected and switched on. After that when you want to go online there is a "connect" button. Simple as that.
"I went to Control Panel..Phone and Modem Options and there it was ...." Yes. That's for the geeks to play around with. LOL

Makes no difference it it is a modem or mobile phone. Both work exactly the same. Generally Blue Tick phones work better for range than USB modem.
JoinMe only works on WINDOWS not Linux
Go to the ZTE
ZTE Forum and ask if they have Linux drivers.

Malcolm, but on the Join Me page it says I am connected to the internet but when I click on the Internet icon nothing happens, any idea what I could be doing wrong?
It is showing up that I am using the internet thought, but I can not get onto Internet Explorer

Which version of JoinMe are you using?
Earliest version which would work with your phone is B18 and you should be using B22. Download latest version from ZTE website.
Suggest you try something like Firefox Portable browser which wont install into Windows and can reside on a USB stick or one folder. IE can sometimes throw a hissy fit in networking.

Bruce it is obvious from your posts that you are running Windows.
What model ZTE phone do you have?
I am running V1.0.0.5 of Jon Me (Help > About) What is yours ?
You have to select the correct phone and your phone will then say "Connected to PC". That does NOT mean you are connected to the Internet.
On the icons, select the second last "Internet". You will then be shown a large blue button "Connect to Internet". When you click that it will do the dial up thing, and your charges $$$$ start. You can then open up IE or your email client.
I'll check back later to see you go ....

On the JoinMe software, don't worry about the 1.0.0.5 Look to the next line down end of line Bxx. The Bxx is what matters.
This link is to
latest JoinMe VER B23
