Seen these home made scoops over at Borroloola on a Hilux Surf, Owner said he made them from pieces cut from a Purlin.
I want to get or make 2 for my Troopy, I was wondering if the Nissan Patrol scoop would be OK, after all it only bolts on, a couple from the wreckers would be the way to go,

And highly illegal in NSW. If you can't have rod holders on the bar then these are just as dangerous. I would be fitting the Nissan ones from a wrecker. At least you know they ARE legal.

Looks don't matter, as long as it works, but yes the Nissan or Prado scoops would be better,

It is not illegal to have rod holders in NSW - you are just not allowed to mount them forward of the bull bar. If they are mounted behind with nothing sticking forward you are OK. It's just like antenna mounts, they have to be sticking rearwards not forward.

Yes, you are right. I should have been more accurate about where and how rod holders are mounted.

Do they have a practical purpose? How would they go in a water crossing ?

Practical Purpose.... yes, and if you put your hand on my batteries on a hot day you'd understand, as for water crossings.... I myself have no intentions of putting my Troopy in water that deep ,

Just get some washers and place under the bonnet bolts that hold the bonnet on . This will lift it up at the back . Achieves the same thing but better . Get some sound /heat underlay and put on the side of the batteries .

Doug,

If the scoops are for an inter-cooler a single scoop like the Nissan one would be good.

If they are for cooling the engine bay they should face the other way so the they will act like an venturi.

Some of the early Land Cruisers, 40 Series I think, had a series of lots on the bonnet to suck the hot air out.

Raising the back of the bonnet and inch will also allow the hot air to escape.

Doug, From what I can see, it looks like the bar will stop the airflow to the scoops anyway. The cops in WA would have a canary on that in a flash. If you go the Nissan scoop which is a much better idea, prior to fitting get a piece of heavy knitting wool about 15cm long and tape it to the bonnet and take it for a drive. This will let you know what is happening with airflow over the bonnet. Gliders use them and are known as a "yaw string"

Doug,
I know what you mean about the battery temps under the bonnet of a Troopy.

Funny thing, when I fitted the 6.5l engine the under bonnet temps dropped.

There is a cruiser running around here with 2 Nissan bonnet scoops and it looks quite good.

There is a product called the Cell Saver that we will have in the new year. This keeps batteries cooler and reflects heat.

Just pop the bonnet and put a couple of dog food tins inbetween the bonnet and the grille. Hold the bonnet down with an ockey strap. Works a treat...:-)

Lucky he hasn't seen me recently Willem.

I've rebelled against the semi bald, crew cut look by growing my hair to my shoulders (much to Mrs Bush's disgust) and our recent 2 months away saw a beard re-appear. All of of it much too grey for my liking but....

Hullo Doug,

I saw a 100 series with a scoop from a Patrol or Hilux in Broken Hill once.

It looked really good.

I would do it, mate.

When I finally get around to it I'll add a photo, I'll have to keep them forward then re-mount my bug deflector on top of them or behind .

I know you will say "Not the Kingswood guy again". Suffer mate.

We had the same trouble with our old car (Ha!!!) and lifted the rear of the bonnet as suggested by some above.

Worked a treat.

Not too keen on the air scoop though. Unless it has something in it to stop rain getting in. A well "filtered" one is worth considering though.

Preference though is for the siomple bonnet lift.Miles cheaper also.

I read a forum where there is an engineer who works for a well known manufacturer of aftermarket turbochargers and intercoolers and his take on these types of contraptions the supposedly feed air under the bonnet is that they generally don't work. His theory is that with air being fed through the radiator at speed and then the addition of another source of air, that this creates a 'high pressure' area under the bonnet and actually reduces the 'flow' of air through the engine bay and may lead to overheating problems. This may be especially true with the design of the front of the troopy which is tapered and thus has reduced air flow from factory in comparison to say the LC wagon etc.

From memory, the idea of creating a 'vent' at the back of the bonnet by packing the bolts is apparently a better option.

I'm no engineer, but seems to make good sense.

If you're a member, do a search of LCOOL as ther is a great deal of information on these bonnet scoops there, written by some very knowledgeable people.

Cheers,

Mark

A reverse scoop should then work well by allowing more flow through ventilation.(not sure how much but it would assist)

Also,

Do a search on the autospeed web site. There is good info directly relating to this point on there. Some areas under the bonnet are low pressure and need a 'vent in', some are high pressure and need a 'vent out'. Do the testing and a vent (the right way) will work well, the wrong way will do nothing or make things worse...

Cheers

While I agree to what people are saying about under bonnet air pressure's, I wonder what speed you have to drive to get this pressure happening.Remember we're talking 4WD's, not race cars.
I fitted a Patrol replica scoop to our 100 series after fitting a top mount I/C and also a thermo fan to the I/C, right under the scoop. Our cruiser runs cool, never has it had a heating problem, before the scoop was fitted or after.
I purchased the scoop from ebay, $60 and sikaflexed it down.[img]

Doug,
I forgot to say that I have seen the left hand inner guard cut away where it joins the outer guard at the front, a deflector was then added to route air between the guard and the inner guard. The air enters the engine bay via the holes that are already there along the side where your batteries sit.

Image Could Not Be Found

Also Doug, the old 75 series to 1989 had a breather on the outer guard that had a pipe that lead to the battery.
