Hi,
I'm looking at buying one of the 7" screen GPS's from Ebay, and loading Oziexplorer on it. I was wondering if there were any particular brands or sellers that were better than the others, or any ones to avoid?
Thanks
Jason

There are differences between models that might even appear the same on Ebay.
Much of this chinese stuff is made from the same design but manufatured in different factories to different specs. Some are better than others.
Look for one with this processor SAMSUNG Chipset ARM920T S3C2450A 466/533Mhz. It is the latest chipset from Samsung. (others will have the SAMSUNG S3C2440A-40 400MHZ, SAMSUNG 2443 400MHZ or other earlier chipsets.)
Latest Chipset also should come with # NAND Flash: 128MB
# System Ram: 64MB as opposed to only 64MB SDRAM & 64MB Flash ROM in earlier models.
You will also want one that has the operating system (WinCE 5.0) unlocked so you can load Oziexplorer onto it. Some will only run the software they come loaded with (unless you know how to play around with such things and hack it).
All the ones this guy sells seem to be the latest chipset and made in same factory as Uniden radios. Operating system is already unlocked.

What these use for road navigation and are the associated maps upgradeable for a reasonable price?
Cheers

Garrycol,
these use NavNGo IGO8 for road navigation.
Maps and software updates are available quite "cheap" if you know where to look.
This site has good information on software`etc.

Hi Glenn, I seem to be losing something in the connection to ebay, could you please supply the ebay seller ID or another identifier of the GPS unit. Thanks Mike.

Hi Glen, one question please.....how hard is it to load oziexplorer? The reason I am asking is I have Ozi on an external h/d which I used to use on my Eee PC (it died a couple of days ago two weeks out of warranty and for the second time blah) and I have tried to get it to work on an SD card but with no luck.

It should be easy to get Ozi to work on an SD card. I've never had trouble getting Ozi to work on an SD card on any of several different types of units I've had over the years.
You will need to download the WinCE runtime file from here.
http://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/oziexplorerce1.htmlhttp://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/downloads/v2a/wince_core_runtime_arm.zip
As from the Ozi website:
If your PDA does not use ActiveSync (it is a WinCE core device) then you can use the runtime download of OziExplorerCE. The runtime download must be unzipped and then copied to a memory card which is used in your PDA.
Then you will need to create an icon or whatever your device uses to point to oziexplorer.exe file on the SD card.

Hi again Glen, I may have given you the wrong info...my Eee PC is a laptop and I do not have a PDA sorry.
So what I should have asked was...how hard is it to get Ozi working on the 7" GPS talked about here? It looks like I down load both of those your given me here and then download my maps on to the same SD card? Thanks again

Yes. The GPS device in question is a WinCE core device. Download the the runtime package to a PC, unzip it, copy the files to a directory on the SD card along with your maps.
It's all on the OziexploereCE website.

Glenn seems to be on the right track.
I have one suggestion - see if he has one that will actualy mount into your dash.
Ours fits into a double din slot and the is compatable with the wiring loom of the cay so we can stiil use all the radio, cd, DVD, ipod and USB functions. I haven't fiddled with it as thats all I want. Oziecxplorer runs nicely and ithe unit has all the Hema maps and any I wan to add. Street nav ig good also.
Extreemly hard to steal. Its not a pop or slide out. It stays there. But quite exe. But SKI funds helped.
Worth investigating for an indash unit. Its so easy to just break a plastic stand and rip the unit out.

Someone once told me that theft of GPS from their vehicle wasn't a major problem as the Ins. Co. looked after him and with each replacement he usually got updated maps too !!

So will
mine replace ours its on the contract already.
But its like the laptop. It gets stolen and its got all the family photos etc on it. I doubt if the insurance man would be able to replace them.
We have gigabytes of maps from Hema, Google, Topo and National Geographic maps and lots I have scanned in from others treck reports etc and set up on the GPS for Oziexplorer to access. Together with hours of music. We also store photos on it as a backup of the camera until we get home.
I realise all GPS units do not have all this but lets just consider the maps. The insurance company will not replace all the "extra" maps and treks and treck notes you have deligiently and laborously installed in the GPS. Same as they would be able to replace all the wedding photos that were on the laptop when it was stolen.
We have a Tom TOm in the other car and it being stolen is not a worry. The 4WD one is another matter as
well. We get a new one. The 4WD GPS is much much more important. Its for fun.
Just food for thought.

I wish I was able to edit my own posts.
The last paragraph should read as follows.
"We have a Tom TOm in the other car and it being stolen is not a worry. We get a new one. The 4WD one is another matter. Its for fun and therfore MUCH MUCH more important".
Sorry about that
Phil.
