Evening all. I live in Victoria and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a Hitch Extender from, like the one pictured in the link below?

Most caravan accessory places would have them.

Google is your friend.

It is not that easy. I have tried Google. So far no luck with accessory places.

I've never seen a hitch extender in Aus or been able to google for one available in Aus.

An alternative may be a longer insert. I recently got a longer one for my dual cab Hilux, there are different lengths available depending whether you have a step bar or not.

Those extenders in the link, come from the US of A. Even though you could purchase one and have sent to Australia, before use you would need to establish validity to use in Australia, compliance with ADR's and AS.
This type of extender introduces a second point of failure. I also wouldn't mind betting if you were to grab the very end where the ball is, you could also probably rotate the tip around a 1/2" circle, which would mean your trailable item will behave like it has a mind of it's own.
Like has been suggested above, a better option would be a one piece item made here in Australia (from Australian steel) that is built to a credible standard.

Cheers,
Dion.

I would have thought that any 'half decent' towbar manufacturer should be able to supply one. Have you checked any ?

I think you would stand a much better chance of getting one from a "shonky" tow bar manufacturer. I suspect these things would be illegal in Australia.

To mount a Bike rack onto our 4WD with a plastic shroud around the rear door mounted spare wheel, we had one made up for about the same price.

Just go to an engineering shop, he will cut the L from your exiting insert and weld it back onto a longer box chanel insert.

Word of caiution though, with the longer insert, you are much more likely to scrape the tow bar going over driveway gutters
It is amazing how protruding that little bit extra makes a world of difference to your depaqrture angle.

What sort of vehicle is it for as have seen some on 200 series but longer drop on them.

Remember the further out you poke it the more the pitching action will be.

Eg put the ball further back from the axle and it will pull the front end up further.

The shorter the extension the better

Hey whoa..............

Towbars are subject to ADR62 and designed to a specific load rating.

Any modification, including extending the tongue, invalidates the original rating.

By extending the tongue (fitting an "extender") moves the fulcrum point and increases the torque component on the bar.

The "Hitch Extender" referred to in Bekali's initial thread is being marketed by an American grill (barbecue) merchant to hang a barbecue on the towbar!
It is not promoted to extend the tow hitch for towing.

Cheers
Allan

Dead right The tongue that came with my towbar for the 100ser stuck out over150mm.

I took it to an engineer and had it cut and redrilled and it made an appreciable difference to the characteristics of towing.

To deliberately lengthen one defies logic as it will put a lot more strain on the towbar and bolts and chassis

The closer you can get your towball to the rear axle the better the effect of

towing and the less effect of swivelling the car up at the front..

If it is to hang something on the back of the car it would be better to put it

somewhere else as the more weight behind the rear axle the less weight on

the front and decreased steering response and hence safety.

If you want to extend it to fit a bike rack or similar like I have I went to a steel supply and purchased the square steel tube and drilled the pin holes and then welded the rack to the end. There is no way you should lengthen the hitch to tow as it moves the pivot point and only a small increase will put a huge weight increase on the rear of the car.

If it is for a bikerack.
You can buy a bikerack from most good bikeshops to fit any car sold in Australia.

I have two spares on the back,so I would really appreciate it if you could pass on the name of a specific good bike shop that you know as I have not been able to find one.

Sadly you cant have everything.

Would be easier to get a custom Bike rack made with a bend in it than illegally modify a towbar.

Whats wrong with a pole with a horizontal bar to hold the bikes

Have seen them that hold about 4 so should stick out past your wheels.

One would think you would have to have heaps of good suppliers of bike carriers in Victoria Vic. It is the capitol of cycling in Australia.
I've got a REPRAC 3 bike carrier. They also make a 4 bike carrier. The bikes have heaps of clearance behind the spare on a standard Patrol wagon. Not too sure how this particular one would go on your set up but somebody must make one to fit.
From my failing memory I think mine was $180.

this hitch
http://www.torklift.com/p.php?w_page=superhitch
can take an extension, everything else is a toy.
You can buy extensions on ebay for single truss
and as long as you downgrade your towing capacity
accordingly it is no problem technically, legally is a different
pair of shoes.
There should be no problem with a camper trailer.

have fun
