I don't want to use brand names, especially on such a debatable subject, but I'm running Cooper Discoverer ATRs on my GX which are approaching the end of their service life and will in the next year be replacing them. The 4WD crowd at work are divided between the tyres I'm running on now, and BFG ATRs with the bias fairly heavy towards the BFGs. Having said that, If the BFGs are better, do they make them in the narrower size that suits the GX model Prado? My driving is mainly blacktop with occasional 4WD in gravel, moderate mud. Pretty much the type of 4WD encountered on the Central Coast and Hunter areas. Thanks!

What size do you have now?
BFG a/t come in 225/75/16 which have a section width of around 230mm.

I know you dont want a brand debate, but Pirrelli Scorpions scored highest out of the top 10 tyres in one of the 4wd magazine tests for your requirements light mud ,gravel and road

Blue
I have a 04 GX with the 17"
wheels and found that the choice of tyres is very limited compared to the 16" like you have.
Anyway, having said that, I ended up with Bridgestone 694 A/T and am very happy with them.
I am like you, I mainly do highway/blacktop work with the occasional gravel and mud, but no sand if I can help it.
The cost of a 225/70/17 ($312 ea) compared to some of the more traditional sizes on the GXL (around $260 ea for a 265) is a bit disappointing but it seems that there are only about 4 manufactures of the 225/70/17 so I really had no choice than to pay the price
Anyway, I would consider the Bridgestones when looking around for a replacement.
Cheers,
Cruiser

Thanks for the tips. They've been most helpful. I just looked up the tyres I bought and they're Cooper ATR 235/70/17 tyres if that helps at all.
