Hi All
I am trying to find some speakers to put in the rear of my troopy. Don't want to cut the door trim to fit them there.
Looking at mounting them up high in the rear. need to be of good quality with strong brackets. have see some at Wow in
darwin but they are a bit big, made for marine. Picture should give an idea of the shape I am looking for, rectangular box type.
Thanks Lyndon

Hi Lyndon,
I had the exact same problem mate.
I picked up a couple of second hand rectangular Boss speakers. I just place them in the back on my false floor. They do the job really
well but I found they had that backgound static. This may have been due to the ouput of the head unit not matching the speakers as when I added an amplifier they cleared right up and now sound fantastic.
You will find you can use just about use any speaker, so long as it has the pos/neg conection to your head unit.

Hi
I have very high drawers in the back and also pack stuff either side, this really only leaves me with the option of roof mounts.
Just don't want something crappy or the size of a shoe box!
What did you have to pay for an amp? Wasn't really thinking of going that far.
Cheers lyndon

Yeh ive been looking at mounting them on the roof as
well, was at
Darwin jaycar not long ago, they seem to have a range of universal type speaker mounts, so they could easily be attached to the roof.
In terms of the amp, Im an el'cheapo with my audio gear so I got it second hand but $200 will get you a good amp, possibly even cheaper. Many of these more expensive amps are only really needed if you want a home theatre package like system in your car.
My boss speakers are about the size of a brick, and they sound fantastic.Outdoor speakers are probaly the safest option though, unless its an area where the speakers arent affected by the elements.

Try Dick Smith. Ask for their outdoor speakers.

Thanks mate. Wow, they are 3.5 kg's each! Pity they didn't list dimentions, they look pretty big. Will be happy to pay more for a small quality set.
Thanks for your input.

FWIW, you don't want "small" speakers in the back. They will sound like cr@p. These would go about the same size as a standard 6"x9" speaker.

Hi there. I have bought speakers from Jaycar: they hold a good range, various types of enclosures as
well as speakers, ranging from cheap to quite expensive for top of the range performance. Their catalogue also contains lots of data to help in selection. I've got $800 worth of their speakers in my lounge room - great performance!! Hope this helps.
And yes, I've checked, there's one in
Darwin now!

Lyndon, have a look at our
Troopy speakers. John made up the enclosures and put a reasonable quality speaker in them. They have worked very
well and do not get in the way - as you can see we sleep in the back of our troopy.
Cheers,
Val

Thanks Val. Very interesting, please send me two :-) Unfortunately I don't have the
tools to knock those up. I have a cargo barrier I was thinking of mounting them too. Main problem is the speaker would be three inches from my head!
Cheers Lyndon

Having speakers 3 inches from your head should not be a problem, you only need the volume down low then!
But seriously, My troopy has some brackets in the back corners which I guess may have been speakers from the original owner. Will take a pic tonight (hopefully) and post for you.

Lyndon, as above, having the speakers close to your head has not been a problem for us, either in terms of sound or hitting head. As said above, not necessary to wind the volume up too much, and when on gravel its just possible to hear the radio!
Cheers,
Val

Hi Lyndon,
Autobarn on bagot road (and Jaycar is a little further up the same road) usually carry a large range of car audio speakers. I haven't been there for awhile so don't know what they have now.
Also see Sound Spectrum 51 Stuart Hwy Stuart

Seems your all into size and stremgth, fair enough, but don't forget the Ohms, if the radio is designed to run 8 Ohm speakers then make sure you buy 8 Ohm speakers,
And why not fit them into the doors, that's where
mine are, and have been for the last 8 years without any problems.

Lyndon,
Like Doug says, be sure to match the speaker impedance to the amplifier or radio.
Almost certainly your existing amplifier will be 4 ohms impedance whereas speakers intended for mains-operated systems will be 8 ohms impedance. The reason for 4 ohm in auto application is because of the limits of the 12v supply.
The speakers you referenced on Ebay are rated 8 ohms, as would be most "outdoor" speakers and if connected to a 4 ohm amplifier will have severely limited output and reduced sound quality. (That may be a good thing for your ears LOL)
The safest bet is to go to a Car Audio dealer but could be more expensive than Ebay. I don't believe Jaycar stock enclosed speakers suitable for mounting in the vehicle. Only bare speaker drivers of 4 ohm impedance where you would need to provide your own enclosures.
