100 series turbo diesel standard twin batteries

Can any body please advise me if it matters if I fit a larger 12 inch 620 CCA battery in the drivers side cradle in lieu of the smaller (drivers side)10inch battery.

I know it will fit but is there any problems with charging or starting (sharing the load ) if the second battery is the same size as the main battery. I am fitting a Piranha unit that I had in my 80 series petrol but the battery is to big for the Piranha battery tray (10 inch) so I was hoping I could replace the original second battery with the bigger one and use the second battery as the auxiliary battery.

Note a big thanks to the guys who advised that I get a turbo to tow the new van. It goes like the proverbial off the shovel

Yes, I have a larger battery in there in my TD (fullriver 120AH AGM).
This guy wrote a bit of an article about doing it to his 105 cruiser http://neuralfibre.com/paul/4wd/fullriver-120ah-agm-into-100-series-cruiser
I bought a new longer bracket rather than modify the standard one.
I do have some baisc heat shielding as well for the AGM.

Nope. Doesn't matter in the slightest as long as it fits in the tray, Make sure the battery posts don't hit the bonnet when you shut it and the battery doesn't get to close to anything that might be detrimental to the battery or the vehicle, e.g, exhaust manifolds etc. In a Landcruiser this wouldn't/shouldn't be a problem.

I've seen people fit bigger batteries in vehicles without the bracket and they don't quite fit the tray and then they hit the Alternator pulley and wear a hole in the side of the battery.

The two originals were only about 400CCA each and if you put bigger ones in

you can split them using an isolator and run your accessories off the drivers side one.

The Passengers side one has all the car stuff already hanging off it.

There are two threaded holes just behind that battery where I mounted my Redarc.
Get new cables at Battery World I had some 2 B & S cable so just got

them to crimp ends on it for me so I could fit it up myself

I have just bought the car and it has different size batteries.

Sorry I havent explained myself very well. I am going to install a third battery in the back passenger corner with the stuff from the 80 series. It has a regulator and monitor etc. from Piranha but unfortunately the Piranaha 100 series third battery carrier only fits a 10 inch battery and the one I have from the 80 series is 12 inch wont fit down the back of the engine bay

I was hoping I could fit it on the drivers side and use the smaller battery in the third carrier.

I was concerned about the battery on the drivers side which is smaller than the one on the passengers side. It appears it doesn't matter if I replace it with a 620 CCA battery. They aren't balanced and must be of different sizes.

Does it already have two batteries in it and are the two positive terminals

connected by a really heavy cable across the top of the radiator

If so you can save weight by splitting them and using two higher capacity ones.

The GXL had two like that for cold starting countries but as I said were only about 450cca.

I put two 600cca Yuasu hybrids in and split them.

Havent had any trouble starting on one battery.

No need to put another 30kg in if you dont need to.

Just my thoughts.

Good morning,

I would tend to agree with the last post. Have you considered that the spare batter you have might be good for putting into the caravan you are towing. Assuming the caravan is not a gel battery. The power might be more useful there.

My crusier a TD has 2 batteries in the front and 4 gel in the caravan. I have the caravan always need more power.

Hi Carl We also use the car for camping with out the van so the extra battery is for the fridge and camp lights e and stuff. The car when I bought it has a winch and driving lights connected to the second battery on the drivers side, so seeing I had all the bits from the old car I would fit them in.

I was told that I couldn't fit a large battery on the drivers side hence I thought there must be a balance reason or something else. It appears its OK so in goes the larger battery and I will fit the smaller one against the fire wall.

Thanks for all your comments its great to be able to run things past others to ensure I dont stuff things up

Have finished the job yesterday and works great.

Started very easily and just as quick with 660CCA battery and have fitted the larger 620CCA as the auxiliary and is working a treat..

Thanks for your assistance and advice. Great result with out the extra weight.
