Hi,
I'm planning my SA trip and currently looking at Warraweena. I note that it would cost close to $300 to do all the trips plus
camp there. I don't mind paying but only if it's worth it. Hoping anyone whose done the trips can comment. Are all the treks worth doing or only some, if only some would you please let me know which ones?
I enjoy 4x4ing but not just for the sake of it, if there's a reason for it then it adds to the experience. So I'd be looking for great scenery, lookouts, gorges, etc.
Any and all view greatly appreciated.

I did all the trek mapping for Warraweena :-)
Mt Gill is the best track with spectacular
views rated now at about 7 out of 10 and Cockatoo Dunbar rated at about 5 out of 10, but 1 point more if you include Suicide
Hill
If you
camp at Warraweena then the treks only cost $40 per vehicle. There are a number of Free Tracks as
well so normally you may only do one paid track. It depends on how long you intend to stay.
Cheers

I enjoyed the tracks we did when the national gathering was there, that said I reckon it adds something when you have some others to do the tracks with...

I noticed that Willem so thanks for replying. Sounds like a must do. Can you confirm though that the treks are $40 each and not $40 for the lot. If for the lot then that's pretty good but at $40 each that's close to $300 if you also
camp each night.

Commercial 4x4 Tracks are $40 each per vehicle. Most visitors do one or two but rarely all of them

Hi Austravel
We have only been as far as
Sliding Rock at Warraweena. The tracks further east may be great but can not comment. While Sling Rock was OK, for me the better site is Nuccaleena, off of the
Glass Gorge Road, from
Blinman. Once again it is all personal choice. The drive into Warraweena is quite barren, compared to the scenery of the Flinders further south. There are many fine gorges to visit in the areas between Wilpena and
Blinman.
Where ever you travel in the Flinders, you will find it one of South Australia's top locations.
Cheers
Stephen

So why did you not go to Warraweena only 3km further on? Actually
Sliding Rock Mine is on Warraweena lease and incorporated in to it for the past 5 years.
The degree of palatable scenery is debatable as each person sees something differtent is his/her surroundings.

Hi Willem
Firstly Seasons Greeting to you and Judith. Like you said, scenery is debatable from each persons perspective. You must admit the drive in is quite bland on the way to
Sliding Rock compared to other sections of the Flinders. For me, it looked like the scenery further east was getting better, but backtracked and camped further south. This will now give me another excuse to get back to the Great Flinders and check the great Warraweena Tracks.
All the Best for the Festive Season.

Thanks Stephen will put that one on the list. I had planned on seeing most of of SA in 3mths, looks like that's no where near enough. Still no choice but to head back to work.

Hi Austravel
All the Best for the Coming Festive Season, where ever you may be when travelling. Like most states in Australia, it would be a very hard call at what each state has as the best
places to visit. Depending on which area you come from, with the warm weather coming there are so many great
places to visit. Weather it be the South-east,
Yorke and Eyre Peninsula's, the Riverland, Mid North, or the Flinders, there are some very great
places to visit and stay.
Enjoy your travels and drive safely.
Regards
Stephen

Thanks Stephen, as to you, also safe travels if you are on the move.
I'm finding SA a bit more difficult to plan compared to others. So many
places and more concentrated so planning a circuit is a bit harder. I'm heading down for 3mths starting March and now realise I'll be doing a return visit to finish off the state.
Will ask more questions as I do more research.

Hi Austravel
Lets hope by then most of the very hot weather has left up. Like I said before, there are still many great
places to visit even if it is still hot.
Cheers

If you are from Victoria you may find the cost of
camping & travelling many of the private properties including Warraweena are not particually good value when compared to the
Vic High Country for example where you have more spectacular
views & far greater 4x4 challenges with alot of facilities at no cost at all. You must remember this is primarily a conservation reserve so although they rate some drives as difficult, even sections like Suicide
Hill are pretty easy.
Our group visited several of the private properties a few years back & of those found Warraweena the best having a good variety of scrambling tracks, history & scenery.
Arkaroola may be slightly better but facilities have been slipping for years & prices rising so we wont be going back there in the near future.
IMHO there are better views/gorges/lookouts around other parts of the Flinders & Gammons many accessable for free via the PARs etc but anything new is always worth a look in my book despite the cost.
Cheers Craig..............

From Qld so hope it won't be to cold, or it'll be a shock. Heading down March to May. I'm finding SA has a lot more to offer than I first thought and a bit harder to plan compared to Northen WA, NT or Qld.
What do you mean by PARs ???

Basically a PAR is a public access route through private property. See this
LINK for an explanation & list of where they are.

PARs are Public Access Roads. These are tracks that go through private pastoral properties, to a place of Public Interest. When you enter a PAR, you must adhere to strict guidelines, leave all gates as founds,
no camping unless signposted, leave the main track and venture off on another track etc.
Cheers

Hi Austravel
Warraweena is a very nice placel , but fairly small , and I do not think it is worth $300 for the few drives that are there.
From our point of view in Victoria , the tracks like those reffered to in todays post 74562 have it all, much greater variety, both harder and softer , including at least 50 river crossings and are all completely free and you can have
camp fires all year round except on fire ban days .
