looking at battery de sulphator and has any one used them or are they just another gimmick like the fuel saving devices .on ebay they sell for $52 and i spend alot of money on battery,s mostly my fault due to not looking after them properly and i have decided to educate myself on battery care and maintenance from now on.

If you mean the pulse type then the theroy is sound and used by many standard chargers now. I have one permanently mounted but how do you know if it's made any difference. For the $ it was worth putting on and forgetting. I think the megapulse was one if not the first to put one out and was tested by CSIRO (I thinks), with good results.

i dont think so. it takes power from the battery and sends it back as a surge i think the surge then dislodges the sulphate that has built up on the plates thus giving life back into a battery that wont hold charge .my reading of the item does not charge the battery i think.cheers warren

I heard a story once about some farmer that hooked his stuffed battery up to the electric fence for a week or so and it came good.
something about the HV pulse that removes the sulfate.

At what price $$$
the largest I could see on their web site was only 44 ah
Their warranty is fairly extreme too

GENERAL PROVISIONS:
Manufacturer has no obligation under the limited warranty set forth above in the event the Battery is damaged or destroyed as a result of one or more of the following:
• Willful abuse or neglect or if the top decorative cover has been removed.
• Natural forces such as wind, lightning, hail; damage due to fire, collision, explosion, vandalism, theft, penetration or opening of the Battery case in any manner.
• Overcharging, undercharging, charging or installing in reverse polarity, improper maintenance, allowing the Battery to be deeply discharged via a parasitic load or mishandling of the Battery such as but not limited to using the terminals for lifting or carrying the Battery. Trickle chargers that do not have a regulated trickle charge voltage between 13.5V and 13.8V (no lower than 13.5V and no higher than 13.8V) will cause early failure of the Battery. Use of such chargers with the Battery will also void the Battery’s warranty.
• Failure to properly install the Battery or lack of metal jacket for high temperature or vibration applications.
• Normal deterioration in the electrical qualities or the acceleration of such deterioration due to conditions that accelerate such deterioration.
• If the Battery is used for an application that requires higher cranking power or a greater reserve rating than the Battery is designed to deliver, or the Battery capacity is less than the Battery capacity specified by the vehicle manufacturer, or the Battery is otherwise used in applications for which it was not designed.
• Prolonged storage of vehicles with fuel injection computers, alarms, GPS and other electrical devices that require continuous battery power to support active memories; this power drain must be offset with a maintenance-float charger, periodic charging or disconnecting the battery to prevent the establishment of irreversible crystallized sulphation in the battery plate oxide.
Failure to address this destroys battery capacity and voids the warranty, as this is not a warranted defect in materials or workmanship. A battery with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of equal to or less then 10.0V will be deemed as overdischarged and void from warranty due to misuse and/or neglect

To obtain warranty service:
1. Return the Battery to any authorized ODYSSEY battery wholesaler or dealer.
2. If the Battery is determined by Manufacturer, in its sole discretion, to be defective for material or workmanship under terms of this limited warranty, it will be replaced.
3. Manufacturer's acceptance of any items shipped to Manufacturer shall not be deemed an admission that the items so shipped are defective. Any items shipped back to Manufacturer, shall in Manufacturer’s sole discretion, become Manufacturer’s sole property

With a warranty like that I think getting it replaced would be near impossible. That gives them every way possible to get out of it. What ever happened to if it's broke we will fix it.

Yes but is that very different to other batteries and/or products. Read any product disclosure sheet and you will find similar disclaimers. Don't think it is fair to single out the Oddessy...

That said I believe it is overpriced compared to other AGM's out there

Hi Warren,
My mate has a Megapulse on his battery.

He bought and fitted it about 2 months ago. About the time he was having troubles with his nearly 4 year old starter battery in his Landcruiser, the battery he fitted it to is the factory fitted unit in a 79 Series.

On Saturday he went and bought a new AC Delco selaed maintenance free battery.

I suspect the Megapulse was way to late to have any influence on this battery. We'll have to wait and see how he gets on with this one.

One thing I have noticed is it puts a high pitched whistle into the Landcruiser Radio when tuned to AM. If you remove the fuse from the Megapulse the whitle goes away.

Bloody annoying when you're trying to listen to the cricket!

The theory behind the units is sound and proven electrical technology. The recent developments in 3 to 7 stage chargers employs the same pulse to de-sulphate batteries during their float mode.

This is from the user guide

Pulsing DC current produced by this product may interfere with the correct operation of some
electronic devices when the unit is placed near the antenna. Install the unit away from the antenna.

Thanks Rob,

That's somewhat of a challenge in a 7x Series Landcruiser!

The battery and the radio aerial are both mounted in the LH side mudguard of the vehicle.

I do hope my post suggested I am definitely in favour of the technology.

Thanks again for the information,

Geoff

In stead of waiting untill batterys have sulphated why not fit 5Watt solar panell. I have numerousbatterys in vehicles & boat that dont get used very often all N70ZZ $100 batterys the oldest is 10Yrs still good but 50% capacity. This system is relativy cheep & works only cost is initial purchase. Cheers Daryl

I Have had a megpulse connected to my aux for a few months now.
and have noticed the plates appear to cleaner than previous.
they won't fix a stuffed battery but claim to keep good ones going longer.
Google battery Sulphation more info out there.
Site Link Megapulse.

Inox battery conditioner may work to slow down sulfation in a new battery but just pouring the stuff into a battery that is already sulfated will just hasten its inevitable demise , all the garbage on the plates falls off and collects as a sludge at the bottom between the plates efectively shorting the plates , one dead battery.

Too true, but I have had it work miracles, then the next time up for a new battery.
Do not think that there is no sure fire cure, once the degredation problem starts, then it's just a matter of time.

Bucky,
I believe you will find if you fit a Megapulse to a new or near new battery, the battery will not form the degradation problem of sulphation crystals to start with.
Your battery will then have clean plates and give good performance.
My first Deep Cycle battery lasted 6 years with a Megapulse fitted, when my Cranking battery died, the DC was put in there to be the cranking battery for the duration as I replaced wetcells with AGM's for storage batteries and I put another Meggapulse in with the two of them too.
(They required a different model Megapulse unit, I put the original Megapulse to the cranking battery)
