A simple question with hopefully a simple answer. How do I extract coordinates (Latitude & Longitude) from Google maps?

Thanks

Hi WBS,

Find the location you want, i.e. an address, put your cursor over the location and right click, a "pop up" box will appear and you need to drop down to "Whats Here"

This will give you the coordinates.

Tony has answered it well for you. If you use Oziexplorer also you can export to it.

By the way that was asking a lot from EO... A simple answer LOL

This website may have something of use to you

POI converter

You are not very specific about the format you require the data in and there is probably a number of ways to "extract" and save GE coords. The abovementioned site has variety programs that create formats suitable for a wide range of uses. Create placemarks at locations you desire in GE and then use "save as" kml or kmz, then convert as required. As suggested OziExplorer is also good at it but not sure if you need the registered ($) version or not.

Hi Greg,

Slightly off-thread, but hope you don't mind.

Do you know where I can purchase the most accurate DEM data for the Gibson Desert area?

It's been years since I've used Ozi-3D but might blow the dust off if I can get a good dataset.

I have the old 9sec Natmaps data but am after something more accurate.

Regards

Alan

Hello

There is new data based on 1 sec ~30m spaced spot heights ..though its not available in a format directly useable by Ozi3d but can be converted if you have suitabel program for the job (eg GlobalMapper). 1 sec data can be downloaded from here (needs registration)..

ASTER GDEM

You will end up with a geotiff file with embedded DEM data. This needs tobe convertedto soem sort of ascii format for Ozi to use.

Discussion about it here

GPS Australia DEM data thread

The 3 sec data (90m spot heights) which can be use in Ozi3D directly is available here

3 Sec DEM Data

Mayeb this suits you needs?

The new 1 sec data requires large files files relative to the 3 sec data but thats the price you pay for the extra detail.

If you get stuck with the 1 sec data send me rough idea of the area required - I will download tile and convert for you (and send disc) when I get time. Too big to email.

I have had plans of downloading the WA 1 sec data one day anyway - just havent got round to it.

Cheers
Greg

Hmmm..even I have some info on this

Google Earth to Oziexplorer

To transfer waypoints:

Placemarks all saved in left hand corner of screen
Place all placemarks into a new folder and give it a name
Copy to Data in Oziexplorer in .kml format

To load into Oziexplorer:

Go to LOAD
Scroll to bottom of page and click on Import Google Earth (kml) file

Then….Go to:
My Computer
Local Disk C
Oziexplorer
Data
And then scroll through Data to find file
Highlight file and click Open

Waypoints will appear on map screen in a few seconds.

Hope this works and is what you wanted :-)

It's a while since I've done this so take with caution:

If you have a Garmin, there's an IE plugin on their website called Communicator; it allows you to export the coordinates of a point on a Google map to an attached GPS.

While where on the subject here is the link to GMapToGPX. Good for creating short routes in Google Maps and then transferring it to GPS/other programs.

GMapToGPX
