Hi All, I am thinking of heading into
Corner Country at the end of the week and quite a lot of the road warnings include "care/extreme care - sand drifts" - Can someone please define sand drifts and how much of a problem they are?

It's the sand moving across the country driven by wind.
Always take extreme care when going over dunes as the track may
well have blown away on the windward side of the dune, leaving a drop off on that side.

Sorry forgot, drifts are usually very soft as
well so you can go down to your axles easily

Keep an eye on the weather reports. Lots of rain (100+ mm) expected in far north and north east of South Australia as a result of rain bearing depression from TC Laurence. I'm not exactly which
corner country you are referring to.

We did
Tibooburra to
Cameron corner and back about six weeks ago. We went in on the Middle Rd through Sturt NP and came back on the southern road. The Middle Rd was rougher than the other one. Had no problems with sand or anything else. Was a bit warm and would be worse now.
At
Cameron Corner they said the
Bore Track was the best way to get to Innaminka, next best was the new Strez. We met someone who tried the Old Strez at the same time and they said it was pretty rough. We didn't hear anything about sand being a problem at that time.
regards
John

Basically what you have to do is drive to the conditions. Occasional sand drifts may be on the crest of the dunes but the roads around the
Corner Country and hard packed as showed in the pic above. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi
I was in that area mid October
Strzelecki ,
Walkers crossing ,
Birdsville and back round to
Innamincka then down old Strzelecki and onto Camerons Corner, roads not too bad apart from the gibbers and corrugations.
Sand drifts all along the old Strzelecki most of the way just needed a bit of caution, sand drifts occurring on the top of dunes Camerons corner area needed more caution with road being one lane at times on the top of blind crests.
Take care if pulling over on those crests.
I pulled over on a crest to give way to an approaching road train, that I could see coming many dunes away, and also take some photos, then found I had to put the hubs into gear to get back onto the road as it was deceptively soft on the shoulder, pleased I was only going slow when I pulled over.
