If its black smoke it probably needs the injectors cleaned /replaced.I f its white/grey it maybe a compression, timing problem or leak in fuel system.
If its blue its burning oil which is usually a sign the piston/oil rings are worn.

Jace All 2.8 Patrols will blow black smoke on take off especially the GU model due to the electronic wire-less accelerator & the lack of low-end take-off. And yes it should be only black just for a couple of seconds Cheers steve

Mu 2.8lt GU always blew a little black smoke on take off and start up. Quite normal for this car. Nissan said it was normal, and nothing could be done about it, and injector cleaner etc didn't do anything.

Every other 2.8 I've seen does it too.

No need to worry - it shouldn't be excessive, but will certainly be noticeable.

Cheers,

Luke.

Jace I own a 98 GU Patrol purchased new and I must say the 2.8 turbo diesel has performed superbly. It has travelled 170,000 ks and we are getting ready for our next trip - Perth to Monteville QLD and back with lots of 4wd on the way.
The only service Nissan have performed is the timing belt replacement at 100K and they will have to do it again in 30K when we get back.
All the other servicing is easily done at home and you save a small fortune.
But you must change your engine oil every 5K eng. filter 10k and the fuel filter every 40K. keep your coolant up to date and all should be well.
The original brake pads are still going strong.
We tow one of the toughest off road camper trailers known to man - Wanderer, built in WA in Welshpool. It heavy duty and the Patrol pulls it well.
The diesel needs to work hard regularly ann I think this keeps the carbon deposits minimal and the injectors clean.
I have never had to touch the injectors. A mate of mine had a much older model with the same motor and his patrol had done over 375k and was still going strong when he sold it.
My only disappointment with the patrol is the too small sub tank and the difficulty in eliminating wheel balancing problems in the front wheels.
But if thats all there is to worry about then it 98% perfect.
