Eighty mile Beach Caravan Park

H everyone,

We are due to stay at Eighty mile beach caravan park in July.
After hearing on the news that the cyclone hit the caravan park, just wondering if anyone has heard how the people are and any news yet on the damage that would have been caused.
The news only seems to have little snippets of info.

Cheers and merry christmas

Best way to find out is to give the park a call in a week or so to allow them to tidy up.

Hi Tony and Dawn, We are planning to stay there also, in August next year.
The report I saw was on Sky News this morning and they said that they had evacuated all campers from the park and only eight owners/workers stayed through the cyclone.
The reported damage was that most of the infrastructure in the park had been destroyed, and that Sandfire and Wallal Downs had taken a hit.

Hope no one was injured and that they can get themselves back in business before next season.

Regards, John

hi John
We are planning to stay there around August next year also. have never been to the west coast of Australia. Saw plenty of great reviews about this park and decided we better stop in there for a few weeks on our trip around Oz. Those photos are just devastating. I just hope they can get back on their feet again soon.

Just heard on ABC Radio, everyone is Ok, major flooding, no major injuries, They weren't too sure about how well the infrastructure stood up though.

hi tony
in the bom weather site advice a.m it said there was some structural damage to buildings at 80 mile beach caravan pk
where 8 people took refuge so i guess that now the cyclone center has passed and they have lifted the warning from that area now you may be able to contact them but i dont think they would be amused worrying them about a july stay at this early stage
they would most likely have it up and running by july unless they get hit again during the cyc season thats anyones quess????
cheers have a great xmas and new year

Boy what a pity.
I reckon the owners at Eighty Mile do a mighty job, going further than necessary to make visitors welcome.

Sandfire on the other hand could do with flattening IMHO. I have not seen dirtier toilets etc anywhere in WA. Looks like an absentee owner who employs do nothing no care backpackers.

Well your day is made Apparently the Loos in the van park at Sandfire were destroyed.

Have a look at the link in the thread.

We stayed a couple of nights in July this year and they would not take bookings

It was first in best dressed and we ended up in the unpowered generator area.

Dont know if its still like that but you will no doubt find out when you ring them.

To the other poster.

Its nowhere near the roadhouse

Its about 23 k down a gravel road from the highway and it was pretty rough when we were there.

We know they are two separate places. However it is not particularly clear which park you are referring to in your first paragraph (as the previous messages were about Sandfire.)

wow those photos are a real eye opener.
We have stayed there a few times and love the place,

when you get to the end of the dirt track and see those palm trees after miles of nothing...its a wonderful sight.

We will prpbably give them a ring nearer to july to see how the place is going. I reckon they have got their hands full for some time

Thanks to all replies

Yes thanks for the photos we wondered how they faired. We have stayed there 4 times. A great place after coming in from the Pilbara and good fishing & shelling. They will work to recover it but there may not be much shade for a while. PS... the road in is just a dirt road no problems.

hi
the sandfire road house and 80 mile beach are well apart
the caravan pk is several km's down a gravel rd off the main hwy towards and at the beach the cyclone has done a lot of damage it's wiped out strong steel framed buildings like they where just made out of match sticks the palm trees will recover it's not the first time in fact i think it's the 3rd time the 80 mile bch pk has been flattened by cyclones
cheers and a happy xmas

We went to Eighty Mile beach caravan Park several yrs ago, they tend to pack you in like sardines & the facilities were not large enough to cope with the numbers.Otherwise a nice place. Have a look at the BOM site there is a report from a chopper flight over the area. I think they'll be up & running again after this one .It's only the beginning of the Cyclone season though! Lot's of cattle lost but people all O.K. at present. Sandfire Road House needed improving but I don't know that the Cyclone could improve the service! Warmest greetings of the season and every good wish for the coming New yr. to you all. Bye.

Sandfire Roadhouse was wiped out by a fire about 2 years back. Dont blame them for still having poor facilities, probably still battling to get ahead. Hopefully they can rebuild back to before, as it is a favoured stop amongst travellers and truckies up here.

As for the Caravan Park, they should expect this type of weather each year, and as such things should be built to withstand the winds and rain. Not sure why people think dongas and such can stand up to a cyclone. Spend the money the first time on a decent structure and reap the rewards year after year. Dongas and sea containers are big bloody missiles when they get going too.

Hi Kroozer, I couldn't agree more about the Caravan Park. As for the Roadhouse, the service must have improved to be popular with the Truckies. The mozzies were something out of Jurrassic Park too, I wonder what happens to them in a cyclone? One thing for sure, they will return! You'd think that they'd have good Insurance at both places, but might be cost prohibitive. Warmest greetings of the season to you all and every good wish for the coming year. Safe travels, Bye for now, Neville & Sally.

We've stayed at 80 Mile a couple of times and to be honest, didn't like it. I won't go into reasons why - we all have different tastes. I wouldn't wish a cyclone on anyone (Lord knows we've been through several and they are really scarey), but now that it's happened it might be a good thing. Perhaps they will now build some decent ammenities.

Still and all, there are several alternatives along that part of the West Coast....Port Smith, Cape Keraudren (if you are self-contained), Barn Hill etc, so if they don't get rebuilt before the next tourist season it won't be the end of the World. I'm glad no-one was injured or killed though.

Merry Christmas

Agree with you there

To go to the Loo from the generator area you need to take a packed lunch and there are not enough loos either.

Was a take it or leave it attitude when I rang, no bookings see whats available when you get here.

Staying more than 1 night and want powered

Come up to the office first thing in the morning and we will see what weve got.

Great, some were up there at 7 am

Was easier to leave and go somewhere else.
