I've got myself a '96 landcruiser troopy (HZJ75 / 1HZ) that I need to do the seals in the transfer case. I've got the workshop manual, but the instructions don't really match up to my model (surprise surprise).

My question is: it states there are 6 bolts connecting the transfer to the transmission, it appears that 2 of them are attached from within the transfer housing. for this model do I need to remove the second half of the housing to get to these bolts? if so is there anything that I should know as part of the process? Do I just work my way from the back to the front?

Or am I going about it the completely wrong way?

Cheers.

Yep you have to pull the back off the transfer to get it off the gearbox, I usually pull the back off while in the vehicle and then reassemble in situ.
Fit the later model double lip seal to the front of the transfer on the gearbox main shaft, also check for wear on the shaft and input gear, they do flog out.
