Hi there All.

My wife, Lin, and I are about to embark on our "around Oz" trip and would love to be able to indicate (graphically) to our kids and friends, on an outline road map of the whole of Australia, exactly where we have been and currently are at any stage of the trip. Does anyone know of a website or of any software that will allow us to achieve this?

Many Thanks.

Have a safe and happy Christmas and great 2010.

Cheers.

Don.

Hi Lindon,
I have done this using a Spot locator that sends back your location to e-mail address's that you can nominate. Your position is plotted in Google Earth.

Maybe this is what you could do

SPOT messenger with tracking option will do this and if you link it to JasonJonas website you get a record of where you are/have been and an emergency device all in one :-)

Looking at`spot on the website as I read it you would go thru a lot of batteries having it on tracking mode all of the time or do you turn it on intermittently?

I have 'done' the Canning and had spot running in tracking mode every day for the 24 days I was away - only turned it off once I had made camp each day.

I have recently 'done' Cape York and back (depart Wagga) same thing.

I have just got back (about 10 minutes ago) from 'doing' the Vic High Country 4 day trip

I have yet to change the batteries

Hi Don,
do you have a HF radio? If you have the latest Codan or barrett you could join HFoZ (click on this link for more info) and you could send email, text, and even GPS positions as often as you want.

Don,

Another option but not as reliable as SPOT is GPSgate by Franson. This in an application that allows the signal from a GPS reciever to be split to two mapping applications. I use it to run Oziexplorer and Copilot together on occasions. One of the side benefits is that with a modem (I use my bluetooth phone) the GPS is able to send a continuous stream of data to Fransons servers. People who are interested in your trip can see where you are by logging onto the Franson site.
You can also run Google Earth at the same time and it can also show your location but only on your PC.
Downside is that you need a phone signal and you pay for the data stream.

I also understand David is working on something for this site.

Sounds like the EOTrackme feature being developed for EO Members could be the go...only need membership here and a GPS enabled phone afaik.

Google maps is a fairly simple (but certainly not automatic) way to do this. You would need to update manually periodically or each day.

I used it to map our route for a Kimberley trip for a blog recently.
This is the link to the Google map I did of the trip.

And This link is to the Blog for the Kimberley trip.

As a member here (looks like you are 'visitor' currently), you could use this site to do a blog on your trip and update the blog regularly. This way, apart from showing your position, you can tell the story of your trip and post pics for family, friends and others to see, just by clicking the link to the blog.

I'm in Tassie at the moment and plan to start a blog soon for just that purpose.
