Can anyone tell me what may be wrong if the light on my dashboard doesn't light up anymore when I put it into 4WD?
Thank you.

Wire fell off the back.
Bulb gone.
Selector switch stuffed.
Wire damaged.
Not engaging 4wd.
Hows that for a start?
A bit more info like make, model and year of vehicle could help??

it is a 1996 toyota prado, it engages in $WD but the light doesn't come on anymore?
It may be difficult to get behind the dash to check a bulb?

Hey Ros
As every one else said.
But more than likely the selector switch on the gear box.
Check the wires or plug on the switch, they get corroded .
You could try and bridge out the wires at the switch located some were on the transfer case turn on the ignition to prove it's not the dash light.
As with most 4wd doesn't get used very often and The contacts don't contact very
well.
Sometimes giving the 4wd lever a work out will solve the problem.
Ps , I wish i had your user name, LOL

From memory the light should come on along with all the other emergency lights when you first start the car. That will ell you if the problem is with a blown bulb or a possible wiring problem.

The idiot light(warning light) for 4wd on my 80 series dosn't illuminate with ignition on.
Only when the lever is engaged.
