Being a BMW fan, I hate to tell you a 5 series is useless as a tow car.
If I recall correctly, the ball weight is only 65 kgs.
If you ring any BMW dealer, tell the ball weight is shown in the dealership, 5 series guide.
My understanding is that it is not shown in the owners handbook.

Sorry I may have read your post wrong, if we are talking about an X5, the issue becomes more complex.
BMW recently revised the X5 towbar, which I believe greatly increased the tow ball weight.
However I am not sure if this only applies to current production, or if it can be fitted to earlier cars.
I suggest you go straight to the BMW hotline, as when we were thinking X5 some years ago, from four dealers, we got different answers.
