my sons hilux has lost 5th gear.he is only 17 and still learning to drive a manual so not in any hurry to fix at this stage .any one have info on the best way to fix.either repair existing ;second hand or rebuild.i dont think very highly of reco stuff as they only replace items that are worn past spec and some times you only end up with a nicely painted second hand box anyway.over all car done 160000 kl 3rd owner and been very
well looked after

Hi Warren, If its lost 5Th gear I would drain the gearbox fairly soon &
check carefully for metalic parts in the oil & the drain plug usualy has a magnet on it. If there is metal parts, the bearings for 5Th gear has probably collapsed, if so personaly I wouldnt keep driving otherwise it will keep disintegrating & cause much dammage. Have repaired a lot of 5Spd gearboxes with that fault if caught early its only a replace bearings job. Cheers Daryl

Unlikely that its just a bearing as it would be still noisy in most gears and 5th would still be present but rattly. Bearings dont go bang usually but collapse over a period of time (sometimes quite short!)

If 5th is completely gone and all else works as normal the shaft will be snapped off.
5th is on one side of the centre plate and is supported on only one side by a bearing. Shaft snaps and 5th gear drops to bottom of box.
Has happened to me.
Probably best to sniff around for a jap import or second hand box as parts are dear. But
shop around as cost varies immensly. ($700 to $1800 for same 2nd hand box)
Box out of V6 fits exactly in place except gear lever is a couple of inches back (or forward, cant remember), not a problem, just cut hole out.
Stronger as 5th is supported both sides.
Mine had been used offroad and towed a bit also but failed driving straight and level unloaded.
I drove
mine for quite a while as 4 speed before fixing and had no probs. Break on shaft clean as and no
debris at all.

Not all reconditioners are the same. Tell them you want your own box fixed and you will pay for any worn parts.
Aslo, ask if you can inspect the box once its stripped own.
The labour will be the same regardless of the parts cost.
This is how I had my landcruiser box done and I am quite happy with it and the cost was quite reasonable.
If yours has low klms ,it shouldnt need too many parts

Often these box's the g52's have a circlip that holds the 5th gear onto the shaft.
This is what comes off, and as a result, you loose 5th gear.
Common repair is new circlip, and a dob of weld to the shaft so it dosent come off again.
Take off transfer case, and get a
gregories manual, and go from there.
Common when 5th is used under 80kms/hr and loads up the gear, the side loading then results in circlip wear, and it comes off.
