Hi All
It's probably been covered before but I couldn't find anything when searched.
We (Bro-in-law, son & myself) are planning on a
Cape York trip for 2011 and am undecided whether to take the camper trailer or fit a roof rack and swag or tent it.
What's the consensus on taking camper trailers up the Telegraph track, is it more hassle than what it's worth for the extra comfort and storage space ?
Cheers

Hi Darryl
iI have been to the cape 3 times and on all trips we towed a camper trailer up the telegraph track without any problems.
We were much more comfortable than people with us who tented it.
cheers Bill

Same same, just got back a few of months ago and every man and his dog had a camper trailer and yes they were up and down the old telegraph track, even the
CREB track and the Frenchmans Track. Enjoy the trip every one should do it at least once in their live, we will be back again but spend more time up there this time.

Yes you can tow a trailer on the telegraph track but the chances of getting stuck in
places like Nolans Brook increase exponentially. As long as you are very careful and accept the risk of a possible drowned vehicle and therefore ensure you have a quick recovery set up before you enter such creeks, you will be OK. Once you get off the telegraph track depending on where you want to go the risks of getting stuck may be high. The Pascoe crossing on the Frenchmans track is quite a difficult one without a trailer. Can it be done with a trailer?- sure can. Is it worth it?- in my view no.
Would I take a trailer to
Cape York?- that depends. If I am going along the route I normally take for tours - absolutely not! If I am focused on a 4wd adventure or explorong- absolutely not. If I want a holiday more focussed on
camping at great spots and doing some fishing etc, then yes I would.

Dazmit,
Did the Cape in August with 2 other vehicles and campers in tow and wives, kids etc. Vowed to do again next time with only mates, swags and a fridge etc. Trying to get 3 families (vehicles) and two camper trailers set up at
twin falls camping area is a mission if all the big
camp sites are taken. Lead vehicle with out trailler always up front as it could get out of tricky area/ road hazards due to having trailer.
When travelling every day it can be a bit of a hinderance? (pain in ass) but when up the top (
punsand bay etc) and camped up for a week it was great.
It doesnt matter how you do the Cape as long as you get there and have fun doing it and stay at home talking about it.
Cheers.

Slide show of about 30 slides here.....
About 50% of those that we saw arrive at Cockatoo
Creek with the intention of driving up the OTT, changed their minds then and there. But that is OK. There is still lots to see and do and lots of camper trailers with competent drivers make the journey.

Cripes, I'll have to do a speed-reading course.
Great shots though.

Sorry about the size. Cockatoo
Creek was used by 40 odd 2wd rally cars July this year. We met many campers here. The hardest thing was us moving over on the south side to let them go. Wished some one was there filming the busy little crossing. We obviously swagged it.

Dazmit. What ever you decide, you will regret it, I did it last. I had promised myself that it was one of the things I would do when retired. Did it with the Xtrail and Tvan. Had no problems at all. Will have to do it again some day and would still take the Tvan. It's the place that you have to do at least once. Steve. B...

Hi Dazmit,
Did the OTT last July/August with trailer in tow. No problems at all, however, you do need some experience as some of the crossings can be a bit of a challenge. Nolans is tricky, but can be done if you walk it and thoroughly check it out for the best route. Alternatively,
camp at
Twin Falls for a couple of nights and take a drive as far as Nolans and back without the trailer, then take the Development Road the rest of the way up. That way, you get to see it all without taking any chances. When we were there, they had already lost 17 vehicles at Nolans, so that's the one to be wary of.
Also did Frenchmans track with the trailer and yes, it is a challenge, but definitely do-able.
I guess it depends on your level of experience and how many in the convoy that can help with a recovery, should you get into problems. If I were you, I would definitely do the lower part of the OTT to
Twin Falls. The top section is really up to you whether you give it a go, or just go for a look without the trailer. Either way, it's a fantastic trip and
well worth the effort.
Cheers and enjoy the trip!
Gerry
