Looking at taking the family to the Lower Big River region for a 3-4 day get away.Camping anywhere between the Big River Bridge and Burnt Bridge camp-sites.

Did the black Saturday fires reach this area?
Any news on fishing in the area?

Just looking for some news on the area.

Cheers.

Hi.
Stayed at Chaffes Creek campsite at the end of August 2009 and the fires had NOT got into the area.
This is a nice campsite with Big River nearby. Didn't try any fishing but it should be good.
Hope this helps.
Peter.

Thanks for the response.

For anyone else wanting info.........

We went for 4 days between Christmas and New Years wondering if we were even going to get a spot, but the place was near deserted. Maybe 10-15 campers across 4-5 kilometres of river. We ended up at the Bulldog Flats camp area. About 2-3km past the Big River Bridge.

We found our nice spot by the river and with the 3 x 35degree days, the kids would have been a little cranky if it wasn't for the tarp we rigged up across the river to keep them in shade all day. On the hottest day, we all took the chairs and tables down there and stayed from 10am to 5pm, sitting in the river whilst the kids played at our feet and the adults had nice refreshments.

Then.....the fishing started. All small 20cm to 28cm trout. Taking insects off the top. I'm no entomologist at the moment, so I struggled to catch more than 1, but from 7pm through to 9.30pm, the water was just boiling with fish, right where we had been making a racket, kids throwing rocks etc. There would not have been more than a 5sec gap between fish jumping on a calmer 100m stretch of river.

I love going to the Lower Big River area and this just confirmed how great it is for fishing, camping, kids, etc.

Going back up with the mates from work in Feb/Mar subject to extreme weather.
