We're thinking of doing this border track over the Australia Day weekend if its not too hot ..

Is this OK to be done alone - I've read a couple of blogs and trek notes - some have gone in convoy some as single vehicle ?

Need advice on campsites and track conditions if possible ...

Is it one way ? Sand flag ?

I do have the gear but little experience ...

Cheers

We have done it several times alone. If you are comfortable sand driving and can get yourself out of any problems you would be ok. If you have little experience and have not done any type of recovery course it is not really recommended to do this alone. You definitely need a compressor as you will need to let your tyres down. It is one way north to south. Yes a sand flag is recommended because there is always someone going the wrong way.

The National Park it is in used to be closed at certain times of the year. I had thought Summer was one of those times so it would be a good idea to check the National Parks Web site.

Steve - the BT south of Pinnaroo is closed during the fire season and won't reopen until the end of the gazetted fire season, 1 May. The surrounding areas are open during this time ie Pine Hut Soak Camp and surrounds with plenty of walks etc but will be stinking hot. Air temp 40 degrees, ground temp 50 degress with the reflection off the sand etc.

FWDSA says the one way section of the Border Track is closed each year from 1st Nov to 31st March.

Having been down the Border track in April most years, I assume the seasonal closure dates have not changed.

BTW, it is only the one way section that is closed. You can still drive down the Centre Track and rejoin the Border track at the bottom of the one way section.

However, I do agree that it is way too hot to do it at this time of the year. There is next to no shade and stacks of flies and no fires allowed, so I agree with going in the cooler months.

Gazz ,

Thanks for the offer but I'm not up to this trek even if it was open ..

I'll just wait a while and do it in the cooler months with company maybe ..
