Hi all

I'm planning a trip next Winter to the Corner Country. One sector will be Tibooburra to Innamincka via the Dig Tree. My GPS mapping software tells me the 290 km from Tibooburra to the Dig Tree will take 6 hrs 38 mins, and the 75 km from the Dig Tree to Innamincka will take 1 hr 52 mins. Can anyone with recent experience of these tracks suggest more realistic travel times for these two trips?

Thanks

Will really depend on the condition of the roads. The Strez (Strz for the purists LOL) can get a bit corrugated after the high traffic periods like school Holidays so many opt for the Bore Track as an alternative from Innamincka to Cameron's Corner (Via Bollards Lagoon Station).

The road out to Nappa Merri is in good condition but the 11 or so Km into Bullah Bullah Waterhole & the Dig Tree can be very rough (rocky and corrugated).

I'd say that 6:38 is a high estimate based on 50 kph. The Strz will generally allow a bit more speed than that but again will be determined by the conditions at the time you travel.

Camerons Corner to the Dig Tree

Check the trek notes here on the site as they are always a great source of info for the areas and routes you intend taking.

Cheers Mick.

P.S. If you're camping at the Dig Tree, take some firewood in with you. It's pretty scarce at the camping area.

Bruce,

If you went from Tib to Innamincka via the Bore Track through Bollards Lagoon it should take around about 4 hours, more or less depending on how you travel. I have been on the bore track a few times and it doesn't vary much in condition or travelling time. The thing that has made the biggest difference for me has been how I was feeling or was I in a hurry.

The road north out of Tib to Nappa Merrie is not too bad but probably not as quick as the Bore Track. Tib to the border is pretty good gravel, north of the border there is a bit of dune country but you can still travel reasonably quickly. Further north it becomes a bit more of a track and you will slow down. The track is more windy and undulating up and down through gullies then back up onto the plateau before you get to the Innamincka - Nappa Merrie road which is quite good but can be corrugated.

I reckon it would take a little over 4 hours but I have never really timed it.

I have travelled from Innamincka to Broken Hill in a day using both routes. The Bore Track is definitely the quickest.

There is a nice swimming hole under the Bourke and Wills Bridge which has seriously impacted on my travel time in the past.

I just looked at Google Maps and it reckons it will take 8 hours 35 min from Tib to Nappa Merrie via Santos.

That is the way I would go and I would halve that travelling time.

came back down (southwards) along the strzlecki in October and it was 100ks most of the way - excellent condition although of course that can change pretty fast. just a query on the bore track north from bollards to innamincka - i did it in early 2006 and it was very slow, lots of sand and definately much slower than the strzlecki back then. sounds like it might have improved?

Luke

I have never done the top end of the Strz, Merty Merty to Innamincka. I last did the Bore track in October 2006.

I was towing my Trak Shak camper and had a boat on top of that. That day we travelled from Broken Hill to Innamincka with a pretty leisurely stop in Tib for lunch. At the end of that trip we came home via Santos and Warri Gate to Tib.

I previously travelled south on the Bore Track in October 2004, from Innamincka to BH, again in the day. That was at the end of our centre and Simpson trip.

I found the Bore track a pleasure to drive both times. I travelled it with different companions, each of them found the track fun to drive.

In 2006 I had one of those days when I just fell into a groove and I could pick lines through corners and settle instantly on them. I was picking the smooth run through the sand and the easy way around bog-holes really early it just seemed easy. That was a bit less the case in 2004 but it was still fun. Yeah there was lots of sand but it did not slow me down much. And it is a fair bit shorter than going via the Strz.

It was a bit the same coming down through Santos. Everything just went well, we seemed to travel quickly and easily on a road that I will admit could seem quite daunting to some.

Hi Bruce, compliments of the season.

I did that trip in October and it is worthwhile. Have just checked my track log.

Distance to Cullymuurra Waterhole was 309.3 and it took me 5 hours 46mins towing an off road camp trailer at an average speed of 53.53 kms with an old GQ Patrol.

My route was via Warri Gate, Santos, Orientos, Nappa Merrie, and then back into SA. By far the roughest section is in SA (I am sorry to say!). Track varies before the bitumen but ain't bad, road works in progress at the bitumen.

Does that help?

From the waterhole it is only 30 mins to Innamincka tops.

regards

Hi Mike,

It is a couple of years since I did that run so it may have changed but where is the bitumen?

Hi Duncs,

Queensland is sealing the ADVENTURE WAY right to the border and they are almost there!

It is a problem for SA as Buses now get stranded at Innamincka for days - emergency services then have to resupply medications etc!

Gone are the days of remote access - at least from Queensland but it does make a good run from Thargomindah!

all the best,

Mike

We came west along the Adventure Way to Innamincka on November 15th this year.
The bit west of the border was "very ordinary", as was the main Strz road until we reached the area where it is being rebuilt.
