Hi All,
Recently purchased an '99 Aussie Swag C/T to get back into the
camping scene and get away as often as possible. I have been doing a few modifications to it. I have ripped out the old hydraulic shockies and want to replace them with new gas units, and was wondering if anyone has done the same, and if so what brand did they use.
cheers,
Laz

G'day, just wondering if gas shockers will be to heavy duty and not allow the
suspension to work as designed? Just a thought. John

Thanks John, I didn't give that a thought - maybe I might just talk to one of the local trailer manufacturers.
cheers,
Laz

That is a point - I noted when buying some HD gas TJM XGS awhile back for the cruiser that they had a purely hydraulic version available too - the bloke on the counter said that some applications are better off without the HP gas. I guess
suspension design and the average load would be the main players - hell - an engineer probably did the original design for A Swag .... maybe he knew what he was doing ? :-o)

I thought an engineer knowing what he is doing is as rare as rocking horse bleep .

Any replacement shockers should be designed for the weight of your trailer and the spring rates.
Some good advice from the shock suppliers to get an equivalent for the ones you pulled out would be in order.

Thanks Notso,
The only problem is that the ones I have pulled out have no markings on them and are pretty badly pitted - but I will take one to a local trailer manufacturer and see what they can do.

Hi
I've just had a look under my Aussie Swag (2002 Classic) which still has the original shocks on. They are Pedders Touring Black. Not sure what model camper yours is so may be different otherwise give James a call at Aussie Swag as he's pretty helpful.
Cheers Dave

Thanks Dave,
Tried to give Aussie Swag a call but they must be having the week off between Xmas and N/Year... so I rang Pedders and I am taking the old shockie down there tomorrow for them to measure to quote me a Touring Black.
cheers, Laz

Hi Laz
They have done
well so far on the C/T having done the
Gibb River Rd, Tanami, Buntine and Buchanan Highway's, half way up to
Cape York to name a few of the trips. Had them of resently to check them and still as good as new apart from a lot of stone chipping. Will be interested to hear how you go at Pedders tomorrow.
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,
After visiting my local Pedders dealer this morning, I have ordered a pair of Touring Blacks for the A/Swag (Challenger). He said the ones that I pulled off the trailer where only a single action shockie which only restricted the uprise. He also said that they supply these to not only the local camper trailer manufacturer (Robust) but Pedders in general supply to Australian Offroad Campers located on the Qld Sunshine Coast.
If your worried about the stone chipping on your shockies a good idea to protect them is to get a piece of 2-3mm rubber about 50-75mm wide and the full length of the shockie extended and zippy tie it to the top half of it.
Also this will probably open a new discussion but, I heard that Monroe actually make the shockies for Pedders but to their specifications, which I forgot to ask when I was there - will ask Monday when I pick up the new Shocks.
cheers, Laz

Noticed the The Touring Black when looking over the Pedders site this am......is described here.........
Pedders Touring Black
My van has independent trailing arm
suspension and that maker also used Pedders gas/foam shocks from the 9500 series..... I would have thought that where shocks can be fully protected from stones (not always practical) a mono tube HP gas would always be the best performer. Might be of interest too, that Pedders sell the Bilstein mono tube range - presumably to complete their range of shock types on offer.
