A question for all you caravaners, where do you keep your generator when not in use?
I was looking at either putting a tool box on the front draw bar with a vent in it and keeping the gennie and 2 jerry cans(petrol/diesel) in there or putting a side door into the front boot of the caravan and using a slide to get in in/out, and mounting the jerry cans on the draw bar .
So let me know
thanks Troy

Mine is in the back of the Croozer, enough weight on the drawbar without that.
Just remember that two jerries will add about 40 kg to your ball weight which may already be high enough or add about another 40 kg for a gennie and tool box PLUS the tools
So depending on the van you may
well exceed your tugs allowable ball weight.
Its not all just bung it on a'nd she'll be right.

Why do you need to carry two jerry cans if they are only for the generator?
Service stations are not that far apart.
We don`t
camp at
free camp for more than a few days before going to the next one.

Depends where you are and where you go Phillipn. If your on the CSR for example, you could be 3 weeks between fuel stops. My 'cruiser takes 280 litres of diesel in the tanks and on some trips I have still needed to take extra jerries.
Cheers

Gerry
I did say 'if they are only for the generator".
If you start with a 20 litre jerry can and the genny full, you will have up to 80 hrs. of running time for the jenny.
I was not referring to diesel.

Hey Graham, thanks do you get any fumes smell from the petrol from the gennie when the car is hot or from keeping it in the car?

No its got no fuel in it and it did smell a little for a few days but havent used it since July so it is pretty dry and yes I know it may not be the right way to store it.
Was about 60deg in the car at Pt
Augusta ( Shade temp was 50.1) and it didnt smell.

I keep
mine on the van and have designed it so it can run in the box with the door open if needed. This is only for a quick stop, have a cuppa in a/c etc. I designed an exhaust extension that pushes the hot exhaust fumes out the box.

ABR, I am in the process of rigging
mine up in a similar way except that instead of mounting it permanently to the van in an aluminium box on the rear carrier and having it run in there when needed I am going to put the box on the tray of the Cruiser. That way the genny goes with us when we go without the van. Also less weight on the front or rear of the van.
Any reason why you would only use it for quick stops. I was planning on leaving it in a box with appropriate venting full time.
Cheers Pop

Hi Pop
I don't think I would ever use it away from the caravan, the car produces all the power we need backed up with the ABR Bi-Fold GP100W panel.
When we
camp we chain the generator to a tree or somewhere out of ear shot.
Running in the box for a quick cuppa with a/c on in the van the box and generator get really hot even with the exhaust extension and door open. Running it for extended periods would surely cause damage and overheating.
There is a company in USA that produces a box with fans and filters but not sure what it would cost to import.
Regards
Derek from ABR

The red Honda looks nice, as it fits snugly in there, however shouldn't you replace it with the battery charger you sell ??

OK.....we give up Mainey - Why should Derek replace a $2000+ 240volt charger with a $795 12V charger?????
I'm guessing it suits his needs and style of
camping!

Phil,
Simply because the Sidewinder branded 12v generator is his own branded product, it would be very good advertising to use and promote your own product, not one made by Honda.
Why would there be any difference in the two brands for
camping, is one any better than the other ??

Mainey,
#1 tell me how you run an air conditioner off a 12V generator.
#2 AFAIK, Derek doesn't sell 240V generators.
#3 It sounds like you're having a go at Derek. He's just answering someone's question like he normally does with a good honest answer and a photo.

Often wondered how much the life is shortened by enclosing them while running. I know many do it and there is even a few groups that sell ready made boxes with exhaust and induction fan. It must get very hot and therefore reduce cooling for the motor.
I had to enclose an air compressor in a box to reduce noise, there was plenty of space and was inside not in full sun like the potential for a generator is. The compressor lasted
well under half the time it should. When stripped you could see evidence of over heating. The guy trying to fix it said bet you've had it in a box, said he has seen it quite a few times and to expect a very reduced life cycle.

Troy, Ours and its fuel and oil cans are carried in a chequer plate box secured on the a-frame. It is mounted on slide outs so it can be run in situ, but usually it is removed from the box before use. It is generally only used in emergency situations (eg power
tools for repairs) and it can be used to run the air conditioner.

Gerday NNF,
We don't have the camper trailer any more but when we had it the genny used to live under the dining table held there by one of those wide occy straps & a couple of screw down loops.
When we needed to use it (not often) just drag it out & chain it to a tree near bye so it couldn't get away!
At the moment I'm thinking about building a storage unit for it behind the drivers
seat of the 80 series, it just fits.

Mine rides in
the tub of my Triton Dual cam along with a 20L jerry of ulp. Thats what I like about the D/c, never any smells in the cabin.
I sit the genny (honda e2i) on a rubber floor mat and push it right to the front of
the tub. The mat makes it easy to reach in and pull it out.
Cheers Neil
