We own a 80 series and a 22ft van and we are both retired and travel a lot so total care was a good option, when i last renewed my total care in Sept [silver card] may be i should have read the fine print it now seems this product no longer gets you your wife [partner] car and van
home should you get sick they now only pay a set amount.
The only way to get this cover [ its called Aussie Assist] is insure your car with them problem is there top cover is about 50% more than i am paying now and it costs more to pay by the mt and they claim you still need total care.
Have i got this wrong.
Question as we get older i believe we need this cover, any ideas, are there any other company that offers this service.
Thanks Mal B

Mal B this is Mal C ;-)
I had top cover Gold
Membership with RACQ at the end of last year when I broke down at
Camooweal (just crossed the NT border). The "breakdown" covered the car and caravan back to
Camooweal (~16 km). I then had to pay $200 for the RACQ to "recover" my van back to Mt Isa (the car was covered by the policy) - the caravan was simply towed by the truck at the same time. The car was then "recovered" back to
Townsville FOC. I was fortunate in that I had another vehicle in
Townsville which allowed me to collect my van from Mt Isa - "self recovery".
This year RACQ brought out their "Ultimate" cover which I quickly upgraded to thinking any problems would be covered. But NO it still does not cover the "recovery" of any trailer type vehicle. I found this out when the same vehicle broke down at Belyando Crossing on my way to the
St George get together and we had to be recovered to
Townsville. Just so happens the RACQ guy from Charters Towers said "we are going there, we may as
well tow the camper trailer for you". FOC.
Basically, the policies only cover what can fit on the back of a tow truck (around 6-7 metres).
You can understand their POV when you have an F250 towing a 35' motor
home out in the middle of whoop whoop. The vehicle could be covered by a "breakdown" policy, the trailer is not.
I'm sure the RACV would be similar. Really have to read the fine print and differentiate the words "breakdown" and "recover". There is a big difference between what they will and will not cover.

Off the RACV website --
trailer and caravan assistance
When a trailer or caravan is being towed by your vehicle and breaks down, RACV will assist with repairs such as wheel changing and the servicing of external lighting. Where we are unable to fix your trailer RACV will provide unlimited towing in the metropolitan area or in the country to the attending Service Depot. RACV will also provide for alternative trailer hire costs in the event that we cannot fix the problem on the roadside.
If you are more than 100km from
home and your caravan or trailer is at a place of repair as a result of a
breakdown or accident, and is expected to be at the place of repair for more than 24 hours, RACV will organise and pay up to $2,400 in benefits for you and any passengers travelling with you while your caravan or trailer is being repaired.
AND
extended towing and vehicle recovery
RACV Total Care offers you the peace of mind in knowing that should your vehicle require towing, that you are able to receive unlimited towing in Metropolitan areas and towing to the attending Service Depot in country areas or a location chosen by the member within 100 kilometres of the
breakdown in Country Areas.
Doesn't seem to be anything listed about the van if the vehicle breaks down ..
Still looking

See the Total Care conditions were changed in 08/09 according to the back cover of the Emergency Roadside Assistance Terms & Conditions
PDF Booklet
In case of sickness there is always somebody to bring your rig
home. Personally does not bother the sickness benefits are gone. Perhaps the system was being rorted by some. As a Gold Member still consider Total Care good value. RACV offers substantially the best terms and conditions and $ value compared to other state motoring organisations.
This still applies.

Check the fine print. I can't find it on a web site, but I checked into this a year or so back, when we got our van. There is a limit on the length of trailer / caravan that will be recovered under this system. I don't remember the length, but it was not real long - something like 20 feet OVERALL, including draw bar. I found it in the small print in the booklet - even their staff were not familiar with it.
We still have ultra care, but accept that our van might not be covered. Hopefully, if it is the vehicle that is in trouble, the van can be hooked on behind the tow truck. If it is the van that needs recovery -
well that's something we are still to
test.
Previously when travelling with Hilux and CT, we used the service twice, both in remote areas and were very thankful we had the cover; vehicle once, CT once. Fortunately not needed since changing to van.
