It's an historical gangster movie when there were no cars and everyone carried revolvers.
It's all set in the outback.
It's desert, flies, heat, guns, and bad men.
Quintessentially Australian.
Not for the kids.

It may be a good film, but an "historical gangster film"???? Just when and where was the time in the Oz outback when everyone carried revolvers? I wont argue against a time however when a fair number of people in the Oz outback had rifles close at hand.

Ok, "gangster" was the generic refence, perhaps "outlaw" is better.
The coppers had revolvers, the outlaws had them, I spose everyone else had rifles.
Anyhow, it's dramatized fiction, enjoy it.

We don't hear much about it now but if you read some of the
Explorers Diaries it was common for them to carry revolvers. The Border Expedition for instance. In Michael Terry's books he mentions the carrying of revolvers. I believe it was not uncommon on the WA goldfields to carry a revolver but cannot recall where I read it.
Hardly the American west but not uncommon.

I don't really want to make too much of this and I am not reflecting on whether or not it is a good film. I know police carried revolvers and have come across the odd reference to revolvers when reading historical stuff and had forgotten about
explorers (thanks Rowdy). I just kind of react to a picture of Australian bush where pistols are packed in quick draw holsters of the USA kind as being 'historical".
