Had the windscreen replaced on the 120 series prado, with a non gen toyota replacement.
First quote $554 and the second $265. It is amazing the price difference ... it is always worth calling at least a couple of
places for a quote.

Beware however that the cheapest quote may not be the best. Glass isn't just glass and installers vary.
I have had a few bad experiences with el-cheapo windscreens over the years, to a point where I think I will go genuine next time and have it installed by someone who really knows what they're doing.

Hi Anthony,
Where did you get the cheaper quote from. Was it of the same quality as the dearer one?
I've got to get one for the Pajero fairly soon and dont wanna pay the $ but want good quality (as always).
Cheers Wilko

I have now way of knowing if the vary in quality.
A post I read recently on this
forum that talked about original toyota windscreens on prados being a thicker glass, I gather from the thread, this is to reduce road noise. If i recall correctly the toyota replacement windscreen was around $900 plus fitting.
The windscreen I needed to replace was a non gen toyota, so I was happy to replace with another non gen part.
I used National Windscreens in Moorabbin Vic. If you want the more expensive company, call the first company that pops up when you google windscreens replacement.

I had a side window replaced with non-genuine.
If I am wearing sunnies the view distorts significantly with a "black speckled haze", but only through the new glass.

Usually glass will do that when it is laminated and you are wearing polarised sunglasses.
might be better quality than genuine if laminated???

Remember too that in the case of a roll over, your windscreen quality affects the integrity of the roof strenght at the front. If your screen is say 1/2 the thickness / strength of a Factory one, the roof above your head will collapse more easily. Of course if you're in a multiple roll at high speed, this probably doesn't matter so much.

I would imagine that models that still use a full windscrren rubber (my 60), it would be critical to get the right thickness screen so that it will seal properly.
Those that just use bog it might not be so critical.

All windscreens be they genuine or not they must meet the Appropriate Australian Standards.
I had two windscreens replaced last year due to large Stars.
One in a 3 year Holden Wagon for $190 and was Aussie made by Pilkingtons.
The other was in a 12 month old Kia Rio $180 genuine fully imported from Korea. Some quotes were 4 times higher.
I just left the cars with my trusted Mechanic and he arranged for a local windscreen service (Mornington Vic) to come to his work
shop and do the jobs.
Being a great bloke (And good mechanic) he added nothing to his price.

Did you ask why there was a big difference in the prices....why one was dearer then the other and why the other one was cheaper?
We get people phoning up for an estimate and we know we are dearer....the funny thing is they don't want to know why we are dearer...the only thing that matters to them is the cheapest price even if it means getting poor pre and after sale support and a getting a lower quality part and job done.
Funny thing the human race is......people will brag to you how much they saved by buying a cheaper item.....but they go very quiet when there cheap item fails or doesn't live up to expectation.

do your fit glass for Windscreen O'Brien ?
Yes, I ask him why he quote $554, he said he didn't know if the replacement was a gen toyota part or not, ... the said that they had to also replace the rubbers.
Funny thing about the the human race ... some companies just want to rip you off.
I won't be calling O'Brien glass in the future ... ever.

Looks like we got lucky... we hit an eagle last week- poor thing seemed a bit confused and just hovered above the road, didn't move out of the way of the car, he looked like a little one... it hit the top of the windscreen with a huge thud but thankfully no smash- glad you guys were ok!

Don't assume an eagle will take off and fly over your car, they usually don't/won't/can't...
Usually when you see them on the road, they're having a great feast on some other road-kill, for them to take off is like any of us trying to sprint while we're 3/4 the way through a big Christmas dinner - they're not going to move very quickly!
Secondly, if they do get out of the way, they'll probably just run to the side of the road - they don't want the crows to get back to the food before they do!
If they do decide it's worth trying to take off, they've usually only reached windscreen height by the time you arrive - they're much bigger birds than most others and they take a bit to get into the air (think Boeing 747 compared to a Cessna!), and then they're also heavy if they hit

Yeah, not much you can do about it really- ours landed on the road a second or two before we did. Feel a bit bad about it but it was unfortunately unavoidable and I am normally one to decelerate for the birds.
It was a bit better than the parrot that earlier that morning flew straight into the passenger side window while we were travelling at 100kph. Scared the bejeesus out of the other half, fortunately that window is still intact too.

Their were two of them sitting in the spear grass didn't see them till one started his flight, from see to hit about 3 seconds. 2 minutes after sunset, took off into the wind which just happened to be blowing across the road from our right.
Last thing I was expecting was a eagle as had only seen one in the last 120kms and it was sitting in a tree 50kms back.
Cheers
