Heading off tomorrow for 2 weeks in Vic High Country.

We are traveling solo, so don't want to find ourselves in over our heads. We are traveling in a HZJ75 Troopy with standard 1hz. I have been down Zeka into Wonongatta before, and out on the Wombat Spur/Cynthia Range and this is probably the steepest track I've ever driven.

Route planned is (roughly) - Home, Walhalla, Woods Point, Mansfield, Brocks Road, King Billy, Zeka, Wombat Spur/Cynthia Range, Talbotville, Grant, Blue Rag Range - then Benambra - Mt Pinnibar, Tom Groggin and then home down the Barry Way.

From what I have read, I can expect the most difficult sections on Blue Rag Range and Mt Pinnibar - and possibly King Billy Track?.

Can anyone give me an idea of whether this will be any more difficult than the steep climb up Wombat Spur? I'm not sure I want to take on anything much steeper than that.

Appreciate any last minute advice.

ps. I have all the relevant Rooftop Maps.

G'day Tim,

You shouldn't have too many problems with the route you've choosen. Pinnibar would be the steepest, but had good traction last time I was on it (18 mths ago) - same for Blue Rag range - not very shaley and good traction.

King Billy is a bit rocky in places but there is no real steep stuff.

Just take it easy on the climbs and don't forget to enjoy the views.

If staying in Talbotville - try Basalt knob track - that'll test you out - but only if you're comfortable - it has a nasty steep bit near the top and is shaley!

All the best,

Tim - Stratford, Vic.
PS - may pay to have a chainsaw/axe/bow saw.

Thanks Tim. Is Pinnibar any steeper than the first bit of Wombat Range Track?

Yeh, thanks disco jim - we are holed up at home waiting for the cool change. Don't have any means of cooking other than camp stove, so hopefully by Wednesday the total fire ban will be lifted.
