Treading Lightly
Hi Guys,
What size cable should I run from vehicle to a camper tralier battery. I have a second battery in car but am running a third battery in camper for lights ect ect.
It will be connected via an anderson plug/socket.

Size 6 B & S would be good with a fuse probably 30 amp at the front battery.
Wont be cheap tho

Hi Graham,
Thanks for info. What size in mm is 6 B & S I only know mm size wire. And yes I will only use it (wire) for charging the Battery, not drawing from.
Regards

JD,
Please fuse between the trailer battery and the anderson plug as
well as a fuse off your vehicle's second batterry (if that is where your anderson plug is running from?). If you disconnect the anderson plug and the wire shorts between your trailer battery and the anderson plug what will stop it from burning the trailer to the chassis?
In essence, fuse any positive cable from any battery as close as practical to the positive terminal. (There may be exceptions to this but in general it is wise to follow this advice)
I agree with Grahams wire size suggestion.
Cheers, Trevor.

He obviously wants to charge it with that wire as
well so bigger is better regardless of what he wants to run off it I would have thought.
I use 4 B& S back to my van which has 2 100AH AGM's in it

Just ask for 6 B & S it is a size on its own and could be up to $10 a metre.
8 B & S may do wait for a few more answers but I wouldnt go any lighter than that.
Its about 8mm dia, wire diameter not whole thing
If you go to a Battery
shop they should be able to crimp the Anderson plugs onto one end for you and supply a fuse to suit.
Dont go to Dick Smith but Jaycar sell it.
I got
mine a a Battery Mart in
Geraldton but a Battery World will have all the bits

6 B&S is only $5.95 at Sidewinder so I wouldnt go less than that. (7mm Diam)

That is an excellent price if it for both positive and negative which is what is needed but I doubt it is for both.

A great source of any auto electrical type components is Derek at
ABR Sidewinder. I have dealt with him on numerous occasions. His prices are very competitive, his service is next to none and he is very forthcoming with advice - on this
forum. He is also an advertiser on this
forum. I have no affiliation with him or ABR.

6 B&S (Brown and Sharpe AKA AWG) equates to roughly 13 square mm cable.
Working on an 8m run from car to camper and return....... you would have a volt drop of around 0.5v at a load of 20A.
Sounds good!

My calcs come at 0.488V drop with 9M of cable run but what gets me is he already has a second battery so how do we know what size cable feeds that battery which should be asked to determine what is already installed as that could limit what he will get at the trailer if undersized.
This could mean that the cable run overall may increase and so too should the cable size.
Similarly the alternator size and vehicle type would help to determine what amps may be available as with out all the details to assess all answers may be misleading.
