The Staircase is now a ramp

Just back from the Vic high country. Was looking foward to doing said set of rock ledges but it's gone!! Bulldozed over all nice and smooth not too long ago judging by the grader marks. So get out your black pens and delete yet another icon from your maps. Mind you, a few big storms could wash all the fill away and it would be back again. Cheers, Warrie.

It probably isn't "fill", they have a rock grinder which grinds the steps away. They did it on the lower section on Billy Goat Bluff track a few years ago.

Remember, these tracks are primarily for fire access, not for our persoinal enjoyment.

We came in from Lake Cobbler. For want of the grader smoothing out a few sections up on the plateau south of the lake, the track would be as good as a road from Cobbler, down the Staircase to the King River, along to Pineapple Flat and back up to the Circuit Rd. An old 70's Holden ute could get through it now. Here's a pic of what the Staircase was.... W Image Could Not Be Found

Warrie,

I was through the "Staircase" before I knew it. It has changed a lot.
The track passed the Staircase heading to King River has also been clean up of all the big rocks that had to be traversed.

Western 4X4 track up to Mt No3 has some challenging parts to it even though it has been graded in the past 18 months.

I had kept it an archive as you do with things like creek xings on the Cape or Simpson dunes. The pix build up as evidence to convince sceptics that these things can be done by mere mortals like ourselves. Anyway it's RIP the Staircase for now..... W

Always had a giggle when people said how difficult the "Staircase" was. Have a thought for the old truckies that were hauling 20 tonne of logs out that road to Mansfield from the top end of the Wonnangatta :-)
Cheers Craig...............

I rode that area on my trailbike over Cup weekend and to be honest I don't recall the staircase!
I remember it being rocky like in the picture and always would slow down for it, but not last Cup weekend.
We rode from Abbeyard down Craigs Hut via Cobbler down to the king river.
