Hi have a 1999 Holden Jack 3.0 TD mannual and the check engine light has come on. It is with the mechanic now and he is running diagnostics and not coming up with a any codes. Anyone know why this might be?

The Check Engine light seems to go off when I press down the accelerator and can be a bit patchy on when it goes on.

If you can tell me what is causing it I would be very grateful.

Cheers

Is everything else in the car working properly? The only time my check engine light came on was when the speedo sender failed. I got a new sender put in and the light stopped coming on (and the speedo worked again!).

G'day mate. Theres a good chance it will be the throttle butterfly assembly on the intake manifold. It's between the manifold and the hose from the intercooler.
The switch on the side of the housing gets oil on the contacts which weeps thru the shaft of the housing telling the ECU its out of the set parameters and sets a code 1486.
You could try removing the switch and cleaning the contact sweep area, but this rarely works.
I recommend replacing the swtich. From memory they were around $180 for the part only.
Cheers Steve

Agreed - my light came on too, after about 4 years and that sender was diagnosed as the very problem - only thing at the time was the replacement part was the whole throttle body and it cost about $750 as I recall - the mechanic did explain to me that the only problem I had was the light being on! - agreed - left it - eventually sold the car for a fair price 4 years later and the light was still on! PS: I did take the sender out and clean it thoroughly but it made no difference.
