do you want to stick with the splittys or go tubeless

if your not changing wheels i would suggest going to 235x85x16 tyres

Hard to give you any advice without more details, why and how are they failing ?
I had problems with the same tyres/rims and was advised to upgrade to "E" rated 265/75 R16 tyres on Sunraysia rims to handle the weight I was carrying over some pretty ordinary outback roads. Others will disagree but it cured my problem, I've had no more worries after many remote area trips.

blowing out through sidewall
we have been trying to get help from dunlop through beaurepaires for 3 months
so far nothing worthwhile
any advice as to any other safety body or any organisation that may help would be appreciated
fortunately the troopy was not heavily loaded nor was speed excessive so we didnt overturn
thanks for your input

The Dunlop Roadgripper 750/16 tyres that come with thenew Troopy have never been the best option and you would be llucky to get 35000k's out of them.I have been using split rims on troopys for many years and find the best tyre for a wide range of conditions is the Hankook 235/85/16 AT.If you want to save a few dollars buy the Kingstar in the same size as it is EXACTLY the same tyre as the Hankook with a different badge.

Hi Peter & Sylvia,
The Road Grippers that Mr Toyota supplies on the troopy are only adequate for normal roads and good dirt tracks. They are the cheapest way out of it for the factory.

235/85 R16 LT's in something like BFG All Terrains or Coopers will take anything you can load in & on a troopy, and should give you at least 80,000 klms.
The "LT" means Light Truck, and they are bullet proof.

The only good thing about split rims is they are easier to get the tyre off.
A pair of Tyre Pliers in the recovery gear sorts that out.

The best tyre in any given situation is likely to be the worst in the opposite type of terrain.

Life is full of compromises, and opinions are like armpits........Most people have at least one, and they pretty much all stink.
Happy hunting,

Hi Sylvia and Peter,

We have had our troopy for about 20 years and ran splits on it until about 3 years ago when we got fed up with flat tyres coming across the Simpson.

Changed to 15" Sunraysia rims and have been running with Maxxis Ats pretty much ever since and have been very happy. During that time we have done lengthy remote area trips where there is a real risk of sidewall punctures so we regard tyres as pretty much disposable items (after all one tyre costs similar to a refill of fuel!). For this reason we have chosen to go with a cheaper tyre rather than the more expensive versions that can still get a sidewall stake.

The Maxxis have performed and worn very well and apart from a 4" nail have given us no problems at all.

Cheers,

Val

S and P,

We had a Hi Lux with splits and the Road Grippers, great number of Km s out fo them (abt 90k) BUT, kept getting punctures?

REASONING: No less than 1x a year I would take all the wheels off and wire brush/grind back the rims, but after, at different times going through water etc, the rust would build up. This becomes quite abrasive and wears through the chube (?? on spelling) , hence flatties.

Get rid of the splits.

Enjoy.
Russ
