Hi, I'm considering buying and diesel 80 series 97 dx, but i'm also looking at prices of deisel 100 series standard models. The prices of both are nearly the same, can anyone offer me some advice on either of these models. I'm not a serious 4wd nut yet and on a budget. just want reliability, thanks Paul.

Both the 80 & 100 run the 1hz engine with similar manual gearbox & diffs. The 100 is noticably larger with more passenger & cargo space along with being a little quieter & more comfortable. Each vehicle has its own set of issues but nothing that can't be overcome. Either model well maintained will be reliable. Just a matter of finding a good low KM one.

4 WD Action this month do comparisons between Manual vs Auto, Diesal vs Petrol in both the 80 & 100 series LC's, also Patrols. You might find the article of some value.

Hi Paul,

In the 80 series manual, both the turbo and non-turbo diesels get the H151 gearbox while in the 100 series only the turbo got the H151 and the non-turbo had to put up with the R151 gearbox. The R151 is the Prado gearbox and is not as strong as the H151. If you are ever looking to add a turbo to a standard gearbox, or if you plan to do a lot of towing, the H151 will be much better at handling it (but I wouldn't recommend turboing a 1HZ motor - but thats another story).

Cheers

Captain

I preferred the 80series because the gearbox was better, and they weigh a bit less. The 97 model was the last of the series and everything was ironed out by then.

G'Day Paul,

I recently bought an 80 series 97 40th anniversary (basically a GXL) 1hz with low km's for about the same price as a base model 1hz 100 series (late model). I went the 80 for the gearbox resons stated in the other posts, 80 is lighter, gxl 80 is far nicer than the standard 100's (although is similar to the gxl 1hz 100's), I think the 80's drive better, they are lighter so they go a bit better and are a bit smaller which suits me fine. I am very happy with it and it is a lovely vehicle to drive for it's age.

You have to hunt around for good 80's, but I think that are the best value for money comfort going round, are quite capable and fairly strong. The 100's are decent too, shame about the light box on them.

Good luck
