Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice from all those who are experienced 'long time tourers' about what you do with your post while away. What we're planning to do is sell our house and move from SA up to FNQ. But we're taking the long way round going across to the west, up the coast and then across the top. But I don't really know what I can do about all those bits of mail we get. Things like end of year tax and car rego etc are a couple of important ones which come to mind. Sadly we have no relatives here in Australia we can re-direct to.

Any tips would be very helpful.

thanks,

My parents while the lived OS got all their mail redirected to the accountant he would then look after bills that comes in and let them know how much to transfer back into their account.

You can pay your licence/rego over the internet & there are some places that have computers for public use for a small fee. You could also redirect your mail to a mail box in FNQ for example Townsville at a pre paid Post Office Box & collect when you arrive depending how long you will be away for if it is going to take you twelve months to get to FNQ then maybe set up P O Boxes on the way with redirection when time to leave that town.

Hi Zigdog
We use Landbase Australia to forward all our mail. They are very prompt and reliable and always get our mail to us where ever we are. Costs: $300 to join and then $4.00 per parcel of mail sent plus postage. It usually costs us $9.00 each time we have mail sent.

It is a bit of a pain notifying all your adressees of you new address. Landbase gives you a box number and you contact all your billers, rego, telephone etc of this address.

Our address is LMB 8009 Locked bag 25 etc
Hope that helps.

Thanks Bushpig - I'll look into that one as it sounds just the sort of thing; as we don't know when or where we'll end up so this can be our new address and it can forward to us at each new location until we eventually settle.

Hi zigdog,

Try Googling "mail redirection" which I have just done - comes up with a few mail redirection services as well as the usual Aust Post sites.

Cheers,

Another suggestion,
even though you may have your mail redirected, there will always be some mail delivered to your old address. If the people buying your house, are the people who are going to be living there, why not give them your 'redirect' address, so that they are able to forward it to you.

Also, ask your neighbours to collect any mail until the new people move in. They can even ask the new 'tenants'to do the same. Most people are friendly enough and will comply.

Along the lines of Fred's thought's, I printed off a couple of sheets of address labels to my new forwarding address and that way the new owners spent minimal time just sticking a new label on any mail that came to my old address. The simpler it is for them, the more likely they are to do it!.

hi iamian
you are right on the money
i paid a $3o mail with holding fee and gave the local gpo all the required details and off i went up north confident that no mail would be dropped in my mail box while away also told the neighbours that no mail to collect

rang a neighbour while away to be told that the mail had never stopped coming so rang the gpo they said sorry we will attend to the error

got home to find the mail had just kept coming so went and had an interveiw with post master and blew my stack he apoligised and made lots of excuses but had to wear it fair square and refunded my w/holding fee but if it hadnt been for the old guy over the road
who knows what would have happened to some important letters that came together wth the usual junkmail

so i have never fully trusted aus post since and have met others who tryed withhold and redirection etc with simular results so i'm saying do as you have to but be aware that these simple procedures do have major failings cheers and wish you better luck in your experiences

We got a nieghbour, and friend, to pay the vitals, ie rates, insurances, what little power that ticked over. ect..

Money was left with her, and if any extra was needed, we were only at the end of a text message, or phone call to organize the difference..

You gotta love that..!

I would imagine you can pay in advance, without too much objection..

Everything else waits..

Cheers

Hi, zigdog,
Another address is"Mail4ward". It took me a while to find the pamphlet. It came in "The Outback magazine". Don't know anything about how good they are, we don't need this service. Phn.02 80921710. or www.mailforward.com.au. They have a basic or a premium service. Have a wonderful trip.
Take care. Safe travels.
Bye Sally.

Hi Zigdog,

Our method.. We do the majors by permanent e'advice and pay them remotely. for the monthly Telstra bill we use direct debit and have no probels with his method

We hired a permanent Post Office box...(about $70 year) We are at home just a bit more than tripping. When we are away our Post Office box tends to fill to overflow and the agency manager creates a cardboard box beneath our box. Periodically when we will know where will be in lets say a weeks time, we ring him, and he puts it all in a "post it" bag and send it to let say Mugee PO for our collection.

We lob a bottle of good scotch his way when we come back, to oil the wheels and feel that it is money well spent and he is pleased to see us back.

Next door neighbours clear our box of delivered Aust. Post letters and send them on when we tell them we know where we will be.

Regards
Benny

We have no home at all and our mail goes to our friends P O Box

They open and advise us of any bills and if necessary scan and email them to us for payment.

Anything that doesnt matter like junk mail is binned.

Tax and rego are payable on line Tax refunds (I wish) get direct credited

Telstra gets paid on line. I would NEVER ALLOW TELSTRA TO DIRECT DEBIT

Reason I was overcharged $549 one month and didnt pay it till it was corrected the next month.

Imagine trying to get a repayment from them.

We let our friend know when we will be in a certain place and they forward mail we need to there.

We provided a supply of Express bags when we left.

If you have a PO Box already surely you have a friend like ours to do the same for you.

Wouldnt be paying any one $300 just to join.

Cheers

I am currently doing this for a friend. He got a box at my local PO and gave me a key. Every so often he texts or emails his current address c/o his local PO and I readdress everything and send it on.

I was continuously "on the road" from April 1996 till December 2007 :)

Before leaving Melbourne in 1996 I went to the local post office, talked to the manager, got a 'private mail box' conditional he sent my mail to where I requested once a month.
It still works for me in 2010, all it takes is a phone call to him (direct) and 5 days later I have all my accumulated mail. It sure suits me :)
All phone bills, insurance and that sort of garbage is direct debited automatically.

You are lucky because i got mail sent to one place and when it hadnt arrived I asked them to forward it to where i was going..

We can only do that with a redirection order was the answer.

Also forgot when we sold our house to include the bank mail for my wifes investment account which was in a corporate name.

Have to do a whole new redirection order and its a business now (it isnt) and that will be ??$ several hundred for 6 months.

Told them to stick it and got the address fixed ourselves

Also you are lucky the guy worked in one place for so long.

Cheers
