Hi there...First time on this page...A quick question. Is it possible to drive the border track, Nhill to Mildura with a Nissan Xtrail???? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the 'real' Border Track or the road through Big Desert and Sunset Country?

I wouldn't take an Xtrail along the Border Track because of the Xtrail's low clearance.

The other road is an easy run

Just for info, the one way section of the Border track is closed until March 31.
Yes you can do it with an Xtrail, but like Willem says, clearance will be a problem because the bigger 4wds create larger wheel ruts. Last time I did the track I had to pull a Pajero after it bottomed out. So it is best done with the support of a larger 4wd.

If your Xtrail is an auto, the transmission oil pan is easily knocked around.

My Xtrail is a manual. Never ceases to amaze me where it gets into and out of...Yep I did mean the proper border track... But thanks fellas, I will make sure I have a backup when I do it. I suppose the "other" road is a bitumen road, is it???

G'day - The Border track proper is a one way track from Pinnaroo to Bordertown and closed until April. I did the track last year just before it closed on my own in a 04 rodeo - 2 inch lift with 265/75/16 tyres and only just made it over a couple of the bigger sand hills ! Even with 20 plus years experience driving sand ( 10 times across the Simpson in all directions and on every track ) I can say it was a bit scary by myself ! It's amazing how much confidence you get when there is another vehicle travelling with you - I didn't even have a passenger to talk to. The road from Nhil to Murrayville is a dry weather road and no probs for an Xtrail. Murrayville to Mildura is pretty much the same - I was ther 2 weeks ago and the only thing I would suggest is take some water and some common sense as it is not travelled by that many people this time of year !

Cheers

Slight correction - the one way section is the only section closed. It runs from Scorpion Springs to the bottom on the Scorpion Springs conservation Park. The closed section is about 30kms in length. You can always take the centre track around this section to avoid the closed one way section.

However, I would reconsider doing the Border Track in summer. whilst it is grwta sand driving, it is very hot, full of flies, and very little shade.
