Garmin Nuvi 1490T

I know every one is sick of hearing or being asked questions on GPS Units and what brand is best but here goes.
It is time to update from my Garmin Street Pilot 2610 and am looking at the Garmin Nuvi 1490T and was wondering if any one out there is using this unit and as such advise on the pro's and cons of the unit in question.
Don't say research the unit as I have but am interested in the views of those using the unit not the views of a sales person trying to sell it
We are heading of on a trip for six months in April and I like the more advanced whistles such as being able to down load POI'S and one must be able to save routes ect but I need the real info and that can only come from those on the road using the item
Thanks to all
Terry

Given that this unit has only started selling today I don't think you'll get any on the road experiences for a few weeks!!

Anyways it has 5" screen. BT, traffic, routes, downloadable POI's, downloadable waypoints, nav to lat long, no UTM support, 10,000 pt track log.

Looks good. Taking one away this weekend, so if you have any specific questions ask away.

cheers

Sorry about people selling units comment but I guess this will save me sending the shop an email look forward to feed back from you on the mentioned unit. But a couple of questions while I am at it
(A) Does this unit have an Avoidance button so as you can avoid u turns toll roads ect when planning a route
(B) I assume that the FM traffic receiver /vehicle power cable is supplying power to the unit when in the vehicle and not a power supply only for the FM traffic receiver
(C)Is the inbuilt battery only used when in the pedestrian mode or all the time and if this is the case one would then require a mains charger is this correct or will it also charge when connected to the cig lighter socket
Sorry for the questions but I can only compare it to the old work horse the old 2610 Street Pilot. Also looking forward to the feed back after you use it Thanks
Terry
Thanks also to Doug

(A) Does this unit have an Avoidance button so as you can avoid u turns toll roads ect when planning a route

Yes the full range of avoidances, U turn, dirt roads, toll roads, highways etc etc

(B) I assume that the FM traffic receiver /vehicle power cable is supplying power to the unit when in the vehicle and not a power supply only for the FM traffic receiver

Correct - it powers both the unit and acts as an FM aerial.

(C)Is the inbuilt battery only used when in the pedestrian mode or all the time and if this is the case one would then require a mains charger is this correct or will it also charge when connected to the cig lighter socket

Battery lasts about 2-3 hours. While on battery power, can be used in street nav or pedestrian mode but of course now traffic info will be received. Will charge and can be used at the same time when plugged into 12v.

Sorry for the questions but I can only compare it to the old work horse the old 2610 Street Pilot. Also looking forward to the feed back after you use it Thanks

Would be a superb replacement.

The article was written about 2 months again - long before the 1490T was on the market. But if you are in the market for a GPS the article is worth a read.

Have you actually thought about going to a shop (I suggest a specialty shop like GPS OZ), holding one in your hands, turning it on/off, checked the features, ask the salesman/person some questions, get them to demonstrate it for you. Gee how will you cope in the bush if there's no one to ask ! Good luck with it.

I know nothing about GPS systems and the various options available and I am looking for a GPS so I read all the GPS threads trying to fathom what makes a good GPS.

I know it is courses for horses. Depending on what you want to do with it.

I want to navigate out back country, create my own maps of unknown places that I visit, walk around with it while gold prospecting (on my bucket list), take it out in the boat for those special spots, and use it when in those confusing eastern state cities.

So keep the personalise comments coming.

A weekend with the 1490T

Good track log,
Ability to nav to a lat long.
Screen was great, large easy to read.
Ran volume at 50% so plenty loud enough for us left ear deaf buggers.
Map view was a bit different from other Garmin units. 3D mode was a very pleasant cross between 2D and 3D. Need to see and use it to appreciate it subtleties.
Traffic worked as expected.
Couldn't think of anything it was missing.

Would be may pick of the street nav units at the moment, and with off road maps like OZtopo would be very hard to beat for the price.

cheers

Thanks to every one for their replies
And to Brian for answering my specific questions on the Nuvi 1490T.
As a result I have sent an email through to orders@gpsoz.com.au
requesting a price on the above mentioned item plus other items to go with the unit and a copy of my receipt for camps 5 but that was three days ago and as of this moment have still received no reply
