Well, I did
Cape York and the Xtrail did me
well. Not one problem. Now I want to go where the Xtrail will not take me. Did the Victorian High Country.
Well that was the intention. VHC 1 Steve Nil. No Loooooooooooooow range. Ok so now I am converted and have been looking around for something to suit my budget. Pathfinder/Prado are on the short list. Some say that they are still soft roaders. Advice on which way to go would be appreciated. Patrol will not fit my driveway.

Prado/Pajero/Pathfinder...... most will do what you need of them, I would toss a coin between Prado and Pajero

Depending on age of what your looking for, the diesels in Both are ripper motors 07 on...
Prado has bigger fuel tanks and live rear axle, Pajero has independant
suspension all round (limited wheel travel)
I'm sure owners of both will sing their merits to you soon

PRADO advantages 180l fuel, and low NL level but expensive for the amount for the equipment provided in each category. Pag less expensive but better equiped, 90l fule is a pain and I would factor in LR tanks. Both need heavier spring to provide more load carrying and higher clearance. The latere the model the lower the clearance. Steer clear on pathfinders especialy recent ones IMHO
cheers

Yes, I'm curious too - currently have it on my not-so-short list for my next car.

The current model is made in Spain and build quality is not as good as early models. Also small fuel
tank, limited/poor under body protection. Finally, not many sold so not sure about resale or ability to get bits and peices in the bush. Anyway, that my opinion

Hi Steve
The Prado (second hand models) were featured in Overlander Mag. Oct 2009 issue.
Well worth a read. I have that issue myself and would let you have it if it helps.
Colin.

Hi Steve,
The Pathfinder (petrol) is a great car but lacks the right amount of fuel capacity and I would imagine the Pajero would be the same.
Prado with 180 lt fuel capacity is a winner. Has gone every where my old GU Patrol would go with no hassles.
Simpson crossing, Ann Beadel and Canning, all on the same trip with out a hassle, would not call it a soft off roader by any means. It did everything the LC 100 and 4.8 Patrol did on the same trip with less fuel used.
Talk to JE, Trent or Christian for more info.

I know you said Pathfinder/Pradu but ...
How about a Jeep Cherokee CRD ?? Physical size is more or less the same -
Good motor - Independent
Suspension - Low range and Auto ??
Be brave - dare to be different !! LOL
Cheers

If the size of the Xtrail is OK why not look at the Suzuki TD Vitara and save some money. It is a real 4WD with low range. A trip to TJM or ARB would improve ground clearance and load carrying.
If you want something bigger then the Prado and Pajero would the go. My choice would be Prado for the fuel capacity.
Cheers.

Depending what age vehicle you're looking at, don't forget to have a look at the Jackaroo - they are very reliable and capable vehicles (but I've heard it's best to steer clear of the 3.0L TD) but only available new until 2003. They are very good value when compared to something like a Prado.
Late Pathfinders have IRS which generally limits wheel articulation (might be relevant for
Vic High Country) while Jack & Prado both have solid rear axles.

I think the large fuel
tank thing is over rated as an issue. If you really need a long range
tank they are readily available.
What you can't upgrade is the engine. Until recently there was a gulf of difference between the Pajero and Prado diesels. I'd go for the better engine.
Finally, wheel travel. Unless you are rock crawling, the Pajero will go anywhere the Prado will go. For outback touring, the solid axle offers no advantage. IFS does give the Paj better handling and road manners.
Sadly, I think the Pathy is not in the same league as the Pajero or Prado.

Steve,
If you are after a new vehicle I'd put the new Challenger on the list.
Plenty of options as in other posts for a second hand vehicle with a transfer case.
