In thread 74866 we looked at shade structures for camping and I described my setup. I have been using a tarp with poles & guys but it does take a bit of mucking about to set up so I got to thinking. I considered having a custom canvas arrangement manufactured but knew it would be expensive but then had a
bright idea........
OzTent make flys to go over their range of tents and I figured that the fly could be erected without the tent as a shade structure. Bought the largest size (RV5) for $160 at BCF and for us it works. Just needed the addition of 2 extra poles as it comes with 2 poles and guys & pegs.
Large enough for two and quick to set up.
Well made but only lightweight material so care is needed but is compact and easy to stow in the supplied bag. We only use it for cooking and sittin'round as we sleep in the troopy.

For quick overnight stops we will still use the tarp attached to the rear of the troopy. Even quicker to set up with only 2 poles and 2 guys. Just have to remember to take it off before moving the troopy LOL.

Hi Allan,
"good thinking 99" .....
well done.
I have been contemplating about our setup for some time. As a result of previos threads on the Oztent caravan connector, tarp uses, etc, I have completely revised the way we set up
camp. I think it will be much simpler and quicker all round now.

I notice you've got the silver reflective side down. It's designed to have that facing up and would be cooler that way.
Good thinking anyway!

I know. Didn't notice until I had it up. Considered changing it but thought no-one would notice. Damn, some people have the eyes of an eagle! :-)

Great idea,
I just went out and bought a 2.4m X 3m canvas tarp to do the same job. Wish I say your article first I would have gone for the ligher fabric.
I am tossing up whether to use zip ties to hold the tarp to the roof rack or some other sort of clip.
I don't want to go to the hassle of sail track and the tarp has eyelets every 300 so it should hold ok and the zip ties are cheap and easy to use.
Regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff, My tarp is the heavy-duty silver/green PVC over fabric. I have a couple of hooks permanently on the roof-rack and the tarp just hooks on. Had to put a couple of new eyelets into the tarp to suit. The hooks are formed from heavy wire with PVC tubing over the wire. Initially they were just bare wire but rattled when driving. Drove me mad! Occy straps from the lower corners to the wheel arch.

Have had oz tent fly for years, with oz tent, and we had 90% shade cloth sewn into the rear corners as
well, helps a lot to keep sun out, and you may need to reinforce where 2 rear poles go as lot of strain on small area of thin material, me have used a couple of
milo tin lids with a hole in middle on pole, under material.
Cheers Pesty
