Fraser Island info please

Can someone please help me with approx drive time from Cathedral Beach to Moon Point on fraser island. I have also been hearing about the banning of gear on roof racks on Fraser Is. Is this now law & does it apply to everyone or just hire vehicles. thanks

can't help with the travel time question as only time we did that trip we stopped off at lots of places along the way.
as for roofracks, it is only going to be the hired vehicles that are effected by the new laws on that issue.

Probably a touch over two hours, David, depending on how you drive and the state of the tide.

I think the roof rack issue is meant to apply only to hire vehicles - one of the local members would know.

G’day David,
Would suggest heading south to the Happy Valley exit and it’s about 28km from there and about two hours without a stop.
Why Moon Point? Driving anywhere on Fraser is great but Moon Point is not a great destination. Just wondering.
Regards,
Myles.

Thanks for your reply Myles F.
I believe the Fraser dawn Barge leaves Urangan Boat harbour & lands at Moon Point area when we arrive & departs at Moon Point for Urangan Boat harbour when we leave. I just want an idea how long the drive is for when we leave to see if it is feasable to leave from Cathedral beach on our last day before i book accomodation. This seems to be about the closest landing to Cathederal beach for when we arrive. I want to make this our base for the duration of our stay. I am happy to look at any other suggestions though. I really need to have power.I would like to have everything i can prebooked. We are travelling alone ( 1 vehicle) & intend to stay for 7 nights.

David,
You are spot on. You’ll have a great time. We’re lucky having so many great 4wd destinations and Fraser is one of the best. I’m booked to go there again on the 16th of December. I like Christmas on the island.
I always leave from Inskip Point. The barge trip from there is ten minutes tops where as the Fraser Dawn is about an hour. I would rather drive up the beach than drive the highway to Hervey Bay. Just a personal preference.
I can’t advise on the designated camp sites as I’ve always camped sheltered behind dunes on the beach. Solar panels make us self sufficient. I can say that after seven nights you will leave wanting more…. And that’s a good thing…. You will return.
Cheers,
Myles.

The roof rack issue only applies to the hire companies as others have said

When are you heading over David?

planning to go in august. i have just finished talking to owners of cathedral beach & they have suggested the barge from river heads to wanggoolba would be better than landing at moon point as track from moon point could be very soft in august. i think i will take their advice

How long is a piece of string. It takes as long as it takes.

One thing I have noticed about Fraser Island is the beach changes everytime I go there. Whether effects and tides can cause the sand to be soft and undulating and your struggling to average 60 kph. Where last year it was like a big wide sand freeway and you were cracking along at 80 kph.

no worries wizard. as i said i was just trying to work out where we will stay on our last night. i didn't want to be struggling to make the barge on time so was looking for some sort of indication on travelling time. looks like i will just have to measure the string when i get there.and i guess most things take as long as they take.
