Nice surprise today. Bought new tyres for the Tvan - 235/85R16 10ply.
I bought Federal because I was impressed by how good my daughter's Federal MS351's were in the high country and I knew they were cheap! They didn't chip like my mine did last month and gripped well.

The surprise came when the tyres that were delivered were the newer Federal Couragia A/T. They come with a 3-ply sidewall, are made in Taiwan, balanced with almost no weights and best of all - they don't have any white lettering on the sidewall!

All this for $225 a tyre. I'm used to paying $300 plus for anything with a 3-ply sidewall. Time will tell whether they are any good, but a loaded Tvan weighs less than half the max load for the tyre, so its not really a test.
Usual disclaimer - I have nothing to do with tyres or this manufacturer.
Federal Couragia spec sheet.

They have a 3-ply muddie that looks Ok too.

Did you have a look at the MT's while you were there Phil. I need to get a set of tyres for Scott and Gaby's troopy for the upcoming trip and would be interested in your thoughts. No white writing though...I'm not sure. Isn't that normally what provideds the shield of steel ;-)

Thanks Mick

Gday Mick,
No, the tyre dealer was a small local business who I like to support, and doesn't normally stock the Federals. I had to fight my way past all the Cooper advertising and displays to find the front counter :-))

I didn't realise Federal made a 3-ply muddie until I got home. The best tyre I had in the past was the Goodyear MTR, but they got replaced by a ridiculously expensive Kevlar version. And Bridgestone don't have aussie made tyres any more.

Also they were fresh stock - manufactured last month.

Thanks Phil. I've been looking for a good 2nd hand set of anything for the Canadians but they're still asking $200 per tyre! I'd probably be better off getting something like a Federal, Ironman Electra or Silverstone.

I'll be shodding the new steed in the Toyo Open Country MT's this year. Keen to see how they go.

Thanks again. Mick

Why are you keen on the Toyo MTs?? For where you go, I'd hope they are better than the Toyo OPATs. I've had friends who have had problems with thin sidewalls - probably as thin as America's most trusted!! One mate staked 3 brand new OPATs on a one week trip into outback SA. The other 10 vehicles on that trip hardly had a puncture.

I see the muds are "designed to conquer the impossible" and all done without the 'white lettering' safety net !

You guys are getting a bit carried away about this white lettering. Settle. It's only a problem when on the inside, ok. :-)

Great news- bit jealous that you have a better set than mine now ;) At that price I might actually consider a new set of Federals for dear Dora when the current sets time is up... how many mm of tread are on the new ones?

12mm of tread. I bought three of the 6.5" rims from the guy at Royal Park because they are a bit skinnier and just fit inside the Tvan's guards. Here's a photo.
