Hi all.
Just wondering if anyone one has a BU-353 GPS and the Aust Raster Map collection by Hema and if the are compatable together.
I have tested the GPS with the GPSinfo software with all the specs done but can't seem to be able to link the GPS to the Raster map. Can anyone advise how they used the gps to show there location on the map?

Cheers

What does the raster map use as its base program Ozi or a derivative?

G'day Bonz, I'm not sure what you mean about a base program. I just start Hema/Raster Maps on the laptop and plug in the USB GPS thingymabob . Could you elaborate a little please.

Cheers

Hi - sorry for butting in. The Hema Raster Map collection comes with OziExplorer Lite. It has limited functionality compared to the full version and you cannot use it for moving map. It can only be used to view the maps (and maybe a few other things).

If you want to use the maps in moving map mode you will have to get the full version of OziExplorer (available from this website for a fee ...or you can use the trial/demo versions from the OziExplorer website to try out).

The entire map collection is also supplied on the disc in ECW format. These can be used with a variety of other GPS mapping programs e.g. Trackranger, CompeGPS Land, GlobalMapper, ArcView, MapInfo to name a few.

After checking my setup I have the ozi lite version. OK, can any one help me get them to work together. I don't know how to start using it. I have them both going but neither seem to be talking to each other or at least i can't see that. If anyone could tell me how do I get the GPS to find my position on a map on the laptop. I guess thats all i need it to do for me at this point in time.....

Thanks for all the input so far.

Hi
Like I said "...OziExplorer Lite. ....has limited functionality compared to the full version and you cannot use it for moving map"

You will need to get another program that uses Ozf format maps (OziExplorer FULL version) or ECW format maps (Trackcranger etc).

Getting OziExplorer would probably be you best option but others may have a different opinion.

Hi David & Greg

I have the trial version of Ozi, but you can't do a lot with it. No communication with gps, only allows bitmap files (no ecw) etc, etc.

I don't blame them for limiting the features of the program for trial, a hell of a lot of R & D has gone into that, but it is very difficult to try things with it. As you said, the FULL version would be the only way to go ( or Trackranger etc) iimho

Good luck, Dave

Thats what IO was on about I, if it is Ozi, then you may be able to set it up for a NMEA input

That should/could make it work.

Ozi is a cheap program, once only payment and all future updates are free.

Hi david,

you will not be able to use your GPS receiver with the Natmaps alone. The Natmap raster collection is just that, a collection of maps only. The ozi lite program that comes with the disc is for viewing the maps only. It does not provide any GPS functionality what so ever so you can't plug your gps into it and expect it to navigate you.

You will need to obtain or buy a navigation program like Oziexplorer or Trackranger. These are the programs that do the actual navigation. It will then use your Natmap raster maps automatically.

In a nutshell you have bought the maps only. Now you need a navigation program to plug your GPS into and use the maps on.

I hope this has explained it to you.

Cheers Mick
